Dan Siekman of Dali Bar

In this episode of the Wellness in China podcast I speak with Dan Siekman, co-founder of the popular natural fruit energy bar, Dali Bar. Dali Bar uses natural ingredients like figs, almonds, cashews, ginger, cacao powder, dates etc. to make some of the best tasting energy bars I’ve ever had. They are more and more prevalent in shops and restaurants in Shanghai these days, so that, combined with how impressed I’ve always been with the product, inspired me to get one of the founders on the show to share the Dali Bar story. We cover a lot of ground in this episode (as usual), talking about Dan’s journey to being an entrepreneur after a slew of unsatisfying roles, the amazing pre-founding story of Dali Bar and the other successful ventures the team has been involved in, the challenges they are facing in communicating their brand values and scaling to a larger customer base, and lots more. One of the big takeaways from this episode, is the patience and perseverance that Dan and his te...

Thames Wangpatravanich of gre3n

Thames Wagantrapavich is the co-founder of gre3n coconut water and is an all around interesting dude. gre3n is a scrappy little startup that burst on the scene with it’s best-in-class coconut water and fun, funky attitude, that has since seen it partner with several of China’s leading health and wellness brands. gre3n是一家小规模公司,凭着其有趣的企业文化、尖锐的生意眼光与品质至优的椰子饮料,获得了中国几家顶尖健康品牌的青睐。 Without established distribution and sales networks, and with a tiny budget to get their name out there, the gre3n team hit the streets, went for depth instead of scale, and as a result has made great strides in de-commoditizing their product, and endearing themselves to a growing community of customers and fans.

Building a Brawler EP11: What a Ride!

What a ride! As I write this, it’s 11 days since fight night. It’s only now sinking in that the journey is over, and ‘normal’ life is beginning to settle in again. I have to be honest, it’s kind of boring. Now that the fear, anxiety, anticipation and excitement have been removed, things seem a little dull. I’m sure this will subside as life fills back up with other priorities and concerns, but the immediate sensation right after everything has concluded is a bit odd. I talked a lot throughout the training how the focus on preparing for the fight caused a lot of ‘less pressing’ or less important aspects of my life to drop off a bit, which was true, and it w...

Building a Brawler EP10: Beast Mode!

We’re here. In a couple days, it’ll all be over. What a great journey it has been, and just a few days until fight night. At this point, the hard work is done, and it’s just about staying sharp and fresh. The final week has been mostly sparring for me, building up my ‘ring cardio’ and sharpening things up. There’s not much you can learn and actually integrate into your game in just one week, so again, the focus has been on polishing what is there already. Other than that I feel lean, strong and fast — ready for battle. Building a Brawler EP9: Simplicity

Wooooo!Starting to feel it now! Just over a week until fight night! Training is going well, feeling strong, confident, focused, and this is causing a corresponding shift in mentality as the fight draws nearer. The training sessions continue to include a mix of cardio training, drilling and sparring, and I continue to feel sharper in all areas. I’ve also noticed something interesting happening with my perception of the ‘outside world’ as we get closer and closer to the fight. As it gets closer, my mind is increasingly on the many details involved in preparation, and less so on the minutia of my everyday life. It’s interesting how the challenges of everyday life fade into the background, or in some cases go away entirely, when there is something more pressing and more intense on the horizon that is drawing the majority of your focus, effort and attention. It’s fascinating how the purpose and intention devoted to preparing for all this can precipitate such a change in how you look ...

Building a Brawler EP8: Moving Forward

Man, I can’t believe it’s Week 8 already! Time seems to be flying by. I think this is probably a normal phenomenon when you have a challenge waiting for you on the horizon, for which a great deal of preparation is required. Your mind is thinking about all the things that need to be improved, and the degree of improvement required, before you put yourself to the test. Of course, there is no end to improvement, so it will always seem there are more things to do than time in which to do it, hence, the feeling of time being accelerated. Anyways, training progresses in all areas, and the intensity increases each week, with more fight simulation, sparring, etc. As a result everyone is left to pursue any cardiovascular training they want to do on their own. Even though it can sometimes be hard to discern the little voice in you’re head from the truth of the matter, I try to ‘listen’ to my body on the days in between sessions at Golden Gloves. If I’m really sore and feeling a little r...

Building a Brawler EP7: Real training begins!

Fights / fighters picked last week, and the first Week of ‘Real Training’ has begun. The teams have been split up based on the matchups, so each team has 3 nights a week of scheduled training. The intensity has definitely stepped up, and the balance has begun to shift in favour of technique training instead of fitness. That said, the biggest change is definitely in the mentality and overall atmosphere of the participants. Now that the date is set, and the fights are made, everyone is focused on getting as prepared as possible. This is the time where it begins to sink in that you’ll be front and center, under the lights, in front of 1,500 people, with someone coming to take your head off. Naturally, there is a mix of emotions that result. Nervousness, tension, worry, conflicted inner dialogue…it’s all there, as expected. It’s not all bad though. If you can get a handle on these thoughts and feelings, they can be powerful motivators, and sources of additional focus. I’m more in...

Building a Brawler EP6: Fighters Picked!

And we’re in! Tonight (Friday Oct 28th) was fight selection night. Myself and another one of the participants in my weight class (87kg) were the second group to spar. We did one round, both got some good shots in, and when we finished they told us on the spot that we were in! Following that the other fighters were paired up and fought as the rest of the class looked on. At the end, the rest of the fights/fighters were announced, and we were separated into groups (Team Blue baby!) and given our coaches and training schedules. Now the real training begins! Outside of that, it was a good week all around. I had a few days off after a long stretch working, which was nice. My shins are the main thing that continue to bother me. Running / skipping seems to aggravate shin splints that I’ve had for a long time. That said, they seem to be getting a bit better / adapting to the training lately, and i’ve been icing them post-training which helps. I also had a float session on Sunday night af...

Building a Brawler EP5: Sparring!

Sparring has started! In this episode, I discuss my first experience sparring, immediately after getting home from the session. The sparring was more intense than I expected, and I took a few good shots to the face and gut, but came out more or less unscathed (though I had a bit of a headache afterwards, and my nose is still a little tender). Here, I talk a bit about the fear and the anxiousness associated with getting hit, and speculate on some ways that I may be able to improve before the next time. Fighters / fights are being chosen this week! The plan (I hear) is to spar all the people in our respective weight classes on Friday, and then the fights will be picked that night! Building a Brawler EP4: Back in Action!

The holidays are over and it’s back to the regular training schedule! I’m feeling recovered and strong! This week there was a lot more contact drilling, and it was nice to start getting hit a bit. Gonna have to get used to it sooner or later, so might as well get started! In this episode I cover the progress over the last week as usual, and the areas I’ve identified for improvement. I’m still working on optimizing recovery time, specifically by hacking my sleep to deal with the workouts later in the evening. I also speak about getting hit more, and the kind of shift in mentality I feel is required to continue learning without getting demotivated by getting hit/beat. This week I thought a lot more about the unintended positive consequences of committing to this challenge, and though I knew there would be several, I think even I may have underestimated this component, which is awesome. Finally, I talk a little about the strong feeling of gratitude I experienced this week. Right as...
