Seat B1: Episode 007 - Part One

To launch Series 2 of Seat B1: The Halifax Arts Podcast, we have a special two-part podcast to help keep you informed on the cultural comings and goings of Halifax in West Yorkshire. In the second part of episode 007 - available from mid September - we will be looking at some local choirs including The Halifax Choral Society, the world's oldest regularly performing choir. This first part of the podcast, however, is devoted to six films being shown in Halifax during September. On Thursday 9th May, the new BBC/HBO TV series 'Gentleman Jack' that chronicles the life of Halifax's very own Anne Lister was premiered at Square Chapel Arts Centre. Seat B1 was on the red carpet and talked to the writer Sally Wainwright, the stars of the show including Suranne Jones, Natalie Gavin and flower girl Hattie as well as O'Hooley & Tidow's Heidi and Belinda who created the theme song. We also hear from the BBC's Johnny I'Anson who reflects upon the potential impact of the series on Halifax as well as to some of the lucky ticket holders who were able to see episode 1 of Gentleman Jack in advance of its first showing on BBC One on Sunday 19th May at 9pm. In this special episode of the podcast, we focus on film and TV to tie in with the Up North Film & TV Festival taking place at Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax throughout May.We chat to the festival's curator, Dave Garratt and our film reviewers discuss some of the films being shown at the festival; A Taste of Honey (1961), Eaten By Lions (2018), Sightseers (2012), Looking for Eric (2009), Saturday Night & Sunday Morning (1960) and Pond Life (2017).We visit Shibden Hall, former home of Anne Lister, to chat to the staff about their experiences of working with the production team behind the BBC's Gentleman Jack, to the location manager of Channel 4's Ackley Bridge which is filmed in Halifax and to the tourism team at Calderdale Council about how they encourage and exploit local film and television production.Finally, we ask local filmmaker Christian Wilkinson to tell us about his new documentary film Halilapse which is being premiered at the Up North Festival.Click to view: show page on Awesound
