A backdoor strategy for retirement

For many of you, contributing to an IRA yearly is a challenge. If you make too much money the tax advantage of contributing to an IRA disappears. You’re taxed when you put it in and then again when you take it out. It seems as though when you make too much money the door is closed to planning for retirement in a tax advantaged way . . . or is it? In today’s podcast we discussed a government legal loop hole. It’s called a backdoor ROTH IRA. It allows you, if done correctly, to save for retirement and avoid the taxes on the backend. Spencer Nelson, our resident financial planning guru, explains the whole process in this week’s podcast. We have been setting up these backdoor ROTH IRA’s for many of our clients. If you’re wondering if it’s right for you, email Spencer at spencer@igga.com. Here’s to wise investing AND financial planning, Iron Gate Global *This strategy is not for everyone. Please consult with a financial professional before proceeding. This podcast is for educational purposes only.

Investing amid uncertainty

Is your wealth protected?

One of the great ironies of investing is how people view risk. As clients initially come to us, their greatest fear is losing the money they have worked their entire lives to save. Now don’t get us wrong, that is a very important concern. However, after we begin working with and educating people, it becomes clear what the most important risk actually is. In today’s podcast we address the biggest risk facing anyone. THIS RISK, if not addressed properly, can rob you blind without you even knowing it. THIS RISK is something that not enough people address because it's different than the standard academic answer for portfolio management. We discuss THIS RISK, how to escape it, the role of volatility, dividends, interest rates and a whole lot more. Buckle in! you’re going to love the ride we’re going to take you on! The curve has inverted, is a recession next?

If you turn on the TV you will no doubt hear that the market was not only hammered today, but that there is a looming recession. An indicator for predicting recessions set-off a red light today and it's 9 for 9 in it's predictions since 1957. In today's podcast we discuss that indicator (the yield curve) and what that may mean for the market and your portfolio. The good news is that if history holds true, there could be some nice upside for your portfolio. Here's to wise investing,

Should you be a buyer of stocks right now?

The market has been crazy as of late. The market has been down 5+% over the last week. Trade wars, interest rates, an earnings recession, Presidential tweets, and much more are causing concern in the market. As the market pulls back the question now becomes - should we buy or sell? In today's podcast we answer that very question. We share our process for determining what is a buy and what is a sell. We address the disciplined process that Iron Gate has been using for 20 years. All of this is discussed to help investors stay calm when the storm hits the market (which it always does). "If you fail to plan, you are...

. . . planning to fail." The wise words of Benjamin Franklin have been true for over 200 years (since he said it) and will always be true. Financial planning is a blue print, a compass, a game-plan (insert other adjectives here) for your financial life! So why do so few people have a financial plan? (Only 25% of Americans have a plan according to CNBC.) In today's podcast we discuss three common light-bulb/ah-ha moments that most people have when going through the financial planning process. These principles are critical that people not just understand but implement. We also discuss the importance of a plan and how it’s not a one-time build it and forget it process. The key to making money over time (it’s not what you think)

Everyone has long-term goals that they are trying to reach. Retirement, college funding, a new house, a second house, a new car, and on and on. So, what is the key to making those goals reality? In today’s podcast we will tell you exactly what that key is. Contrary to belief, the one thing it is not is investment return. We will go back in time, review the last nine months of the market and share with you some Morningstar statistics that will cause you to reflect about your own behavior. Finally, we discuss why so few people can actually manage their own money, the birthplace of pizza and the role of vinegar in a healthy diet. Here’s to wise investing, Iron Gate Global Advisors This podcast is for educational purposes only and does not constitute a recommendation to buy or sell any securities.

How many stocks should you own?

Recently I reviewed a portfolio for a perspective client. This portfolio was made up of well over 100 stocks! I then told them this was an average to below average portfolio. They then asked the question, “How many stocks should be in a portfolio?” In today’s podcast we answer that very question. We explain why fewer stocks is often better and how, if done correctly, the portfolio can be less-risky than a portfolio with many stocks. We also address the trade war and how it may impact investments. All of that content along with a clip from our investing hero, Warren Buffett, is in today’s podcast. Here’s to wise investing, Iron Gate Global Advisors This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a recommendation to buy or sell securities. Please consult with a financial professional before investing. Past performance is not indicative of future results. There is risk in any investment.
