About Us

Join Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on a daily journey to discover key principles in the areas of marketing, sales (particularly closing) and leadership. A big challenge for law firm attorneys is that their work is driven (mostly) by the billable hour. If lawyers do not have enough clients of their own to fill up the day and to employ a few associates, the lawyers' lifestyle and career are up to the whims of someone else. That person has all the cards and can live the lifestyle that most people dream of. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/attorneydsy/support

164: How To Become A Growth-Oriented Person, Part 3: Make Failure Your Friend

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: The third step for attorneys to become growth-oriented persons is to make failure your friend. We must understand that a high percentage of potential clients have no interest in working with us. We must take enough action to get in front of the people who are interested in working with us. But failure can prevent us from taking action if we let it. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, we can make failure our friend by: learning from every failure, realizing that we must be willing to do something afraid because eventually we will become qualified to do it, and understanding that action reduces fear and increases courage. In the words of John Maxwell: "I would rather try something bigger than my capabilities with high odds of failure than attempt something smaller that I know I could achieve." If you need an attorney or want to refer a case, you can contact me at (312) 239-9722 or dscriven-young@pecklaw.com. Check out my we...

163: How To Become A Growth-Oriented Person, Part 2: Adopt A Teachable Spirit

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: The second step for attorneys to become a growth-oriented person is to adopt a teachable spirit. This is important so we can learn from our experiences and projects that we do as attorneys. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, we can adopt a teachable spirit by making growth our number-one priority, looking for growth possibilities in every situation, asking questions that will help us grow, filing what we have learned, and passing what we have learned on to others. Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: The first step for attorneys to become a growth-oriented person is to embrace change. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, "growth means change". We must accept that change will happen. We must also take action to change when we want to grow in some area of our life. 161: Grow With A Timeline, Not With A Finish Line

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: Attorneys must realize that there is no finish line when it comes to leadership. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, successful leaders seek to make progress everyday to grow themselves, their colleagues, and their clients. We must create a "growth-oriented culture" that "values development, focuses on stretching, honors serving, emphasizes the student, and where the target is growth." 160: Grow In A Few Vital Areas Rather Than Trying To Grow In All Areas

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: As leaders, attorneys should try to grow in a few vital areas rather than trying to grow in all areas. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, successful people share these REAL traits: (1) relationships, (2) equipping the next generation, (3) attitude, and (4) leadership. 159: Grow Inward, Not Outward

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: As leaders, attorneys must decide that they want to grow inward as opposed to growing outward. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, when we grow outward, we are usually motivated by someone else who expects something from you. Or, you're trying to reach some external goal. But when you are growing inward, we have inward motivation. This is better because "growth on the inside fuels growth on the outside, not the other way around." 158: Why We Should Change From A "Goals" Mindset To A "Growth" Mindset

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: As leaders, attorneys must change from having a "goals" mindset to having a "growth" mindset. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, achieving goals are not as significant as the growth we receive: "Goals helped me to do better. But growth helped me to become better." 157: When You Add Value, Treat Any Return As An Unexpected Blessing

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: When attorneys add value, they must treat any return as an unexpected blessing. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, we will receive many returns from adding value. But that should not be the primary reason why we do so. We must also remember to add value first to the people who are in front of us -- our clients, colleagues, paralegals, and support staff. We owe it to them to add value no matter what. We should also remember that we must add value to others, including our larger community and those who cannot afford to hire an attorney. 156: Add Value Because It's The Right Thing To Do

Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: Attorneys must add value because it's the right thing to do. As John Maxwell says in his book, Leadershift, we shouldn't add value to others because we want something in return or because we want to recognition. Instead, we add value because we are leaders -- our followers are counting on us to help them. Chicago attorney Dave Scriven-Young on leadership: Attorneys must be the first to add value to their clients and colleagues.
