SHI 0418 - The Power of Storytelling

EThere is a lot of research done on how storytelling helps people remember facts easier. When that story also evokes emotion, that emotion leads to a decision. In student housing, we are trying to get prospects, tenants, and employees to make decisions all the time. But how many of us are using story telling on our leasing tour, or in a roommate mediation, or in our employee training? In this episode Wes sits down with the host of the Storytelling 2.0 podcast and the new Head of People & Culture at Cardinal Group Management, Peter Lynch, to talk about how we can harness the power of storytelling to make sure your property is memorable to your prospects and to provide real impact to the people you lead. We also listen to an audio clip from our Southwest Regional Summit where we sit down with the true professionals of storytelling, the leadership team at Waco Tours, to discuss how telling the stories of their little city has turned into a thriving business. This episode is sponsored by uForis VR. For more information, go to uForis.com. For more information on the upcoming IMN 360 Student Housing Conference. SHI 0416 - Rearview Mirrors & Windshields

ESo we are starting to close out 2019 as we are in the last 7 weeks or so of the year. Here at SHI we’ve already done a lot of reflection this past year and we’re now planning out 2020. You know, in Student Housing and working within the academic calendar you really never get a good chance to do that. It has to happen while you’re either finishing out a leasing season or starting a new one. So at our last 2 regional summits in Waco and Charlotte we put a panel together, just to talk about what everyone learned in 2019 and how we planned on altering things for the 2020 lease-up cycle. We called the session, Rearview Mirrors and Windshields. In this episode we replay the panel from our Southeast Summit in Charlotte with was moderated by Kevin Sealy, President at Valeo Student. The panelist included: Ashlei Elise, Regional Leasing & Marketing Manager for Landmark Nayshan Cook, CEO at Resident Reach Sam Winn, Director at AgencyFifty3 So these guys are not only seeing things at the ground level at the leasing offices and on campus, but they are also seeing it from a social media engagement and digital spend perspective as well. This is one you are going to want to take notes on and make sure you pick up on the things that surprised them this past year and how they are adjusting. This episode is sponsored by uForis VR. SHI 0413 - Mental Health & Campus Resources

EMental health and college students is always a big topic. The majority of the student population are at an age when they are dealing with new pressures and experiences that can manifest or bring mental health issues to the surface. However there seems to be a huge gap in knowledge by off-campus housing professionals on how to identify these issues and understand the resources available to students to provide assistance. In this episode we talk with Dr. Kirk Dougher, AVC for Student Support and Wellness at Washington University in St Louis, to provide some insight on what types of signs to look for when a student may be dealing with a mental health issue and the support that the student and the off-campus housing provider can utilize.
