1 Cor. 10:13 – “Fighting the Good Fight: Overcoming Sin in the Kingdom of God”

Speaker: Pastor Stephan Bauer | 1 John 5:11-12 – And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 Pet. 5:8 – Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Cor. 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. I. Our Adversary wants to Undermine Our Identity as Children of God (1 John 5:11-2). II. Our Adversary wants Christians to Believe that they Cannot Overcome Sin and Pursue Holiness (1 Cor. 10:13). Sin: any thought, word, desire, action, or omission of these, which are contrary to the law of God or defective when compared with it Temptation: enticement to sin by arguments, by flattery, or by the offer of some real or apparent good A. Every temptation faced in life by the believer is common to humankind (vs. 13a; Jas. 1:13-14; 1 John 2:16). James 1:12-14 – 12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 1 John 2:16 – For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. (NKJV) Gen. 3:6 – When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and also desirable for gaining knowledge, she took some and ate it. B. God promises to protect us from temptations we cannot bear (vs. 13b; Jas. 1:2-3,12-14; Matt. 6:13). James 1:2-3 – 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Matt. 6:13 – And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. C. God promises us victory as He grants us the power to overcome whatever temptations befall us (vs. 13c; Psa. 119:9,11; Heb. 4:14-16; 2 Cor. 10:5). Psa. 119:9,11 – How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. … I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Heb. 4:14-16 – 14Therefore since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. 16Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. 2 Cor. 10:4-5 – 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, the have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. III. God’s Children Victoriously Meet the Test as they Rely upon Him, Resist the Devil and Pursue Holiness (Jas. 4:4,7; 1 Pet. 2:9). James 4:4-9 – 4You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. … 7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 1 Pet. 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
