Genesis 29:31-30:24 – The Dirty Dozen

In this week’s text, we will witness the birth of eleven of Jacob’s twelve sons. Six of them will be born to Leah; four will be born to Leah and Rachel’s handmaids; and one will be born to Rachel. When we get to chapter 35, we will read about the birth of the twelfth son born to Rachel. I like to refer to these twelve sons as the “dirty dozen,” not because they were physically filthy, but because of the smutty circumstances we will read about today that surrounded their birth. George

Genesis 29:1-30 – God’s Boot Camp

In Scripture, the Christian is often likened to a soldier fighting in a war. But before any soldier goes to war, he must complete his basic training in boot camp. Jacob, the main character of today’s text, spent years in his basic training, and from his experience, we’ll learn a lot about our own boot camp, and why it lasts as long as it does, and why it’s more difficult for some than it is for others. George

The purpose of Chronicles is to bring hope in the future Messiah who will come from David’s line. While the history of God’s people is marred, it does not lead to despair. Chronicles helps us to look to the King of Kings, trust in His word, seek Him with all our heart, and let Him fight our battles.

Genesis 28:16-22 – Overcoming Bad Theology

In this week’s study we will see how Jacob, after seeing the glorified Lord in a dream, will make a vow to make Jehovah his God. But as we will see, his vow is based on some bad theology that the Lord is going to have to correct. A lot of us have some pretty bad theology when we first get saved, too. But just like He did for Jacob, God will use His word and His Spirit and our life experiences to overcome our flawed beliefs. George

Genesis 28:10-15 – Climbing Jacob’s Ladder

Today we will be taking a peak at the vision Jacob saw in his dream of a ladder or staircase that reached from heaven to earth. As we will learn in our lesson, the ladder he saw is the one that serves as a bridge between God and man and heaven and earth. And not only is the story rich in theological symbolism, it has great application for all of us who from time to time find ourselves feeling all alone in a very dark world. George

Genesis 28:1-9 – Learning from Failure (includes communion)

Maxwell Maltz is credited with the quote, “You make mistakes; mistakes don’t make you!” That’s not true. Our mistakes will contribute negatively to who we are if we don’t learn from them. As we are seeing in our study in our study in Genesis, Esau was a profane man because he didn’t learn from his mistakes, and so he only compounded them. So what we want to do today as we look at his failures is to learn from his mistakes so that we don’t repeat them in our own lives. George

2 Chronicles 2-3

Genesis 27:30-46 – Sucking this World Like an Orange

Samuel Butler once wrote these lines about the worldly man: For truth is precious and divine; Too rich a pearl for carnal swine. Esau was a man who had little or no regard for the truth of the Lord. All he cared about were the things of this world, and today as we finish our study on chapter 27 of Genesis, we are going to see the cost Esau paid for his carnality. Here was this man who “sucked this world like an orange,” without any regard for the word of the Lord, and so his oranges eventually turned to lemons, and his life became very sour and bitter.
