Joy to the World

Angels We Have Heard on High

If thou hast two loaves of bread, sell one and buy flowers, for bread is food for the body, but flowers are food for the mind. ~ Galen of Pergamon, c. 200 AD. Not at once; but woman is the mothering element in the world and her vote will go toward helping forward the time when life's Bread, which is home, shelter and security, and the Roses of life, music, education, nature and books, shall be the heritage of every child that is born in the country, in the government of which she has a voice. ~ Helen Todd, 1910 Human dignity is the same for all human beings; when I trample on the dignity of another, I am trampling on my own. ~ Pope Francis

Give All You Can

No one has ever become poor by giving. ~ Anne Frank First, provide things needful for yourself; food to eat, raiment to put on, whatever nature moderately requires for preserving the body in health and strength. Secondly, provide these for your wife [sic], your children, your servants or any others who pertain to your household. If when this is done there be an overplus left, then “do good to them that are of the household of faith.” If there be an overplus still, “as you have opportunity, do good unto all men [sic].” In so doing, you give all you can; nay in a sound sense, all you have. ~ John Wesley There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward. ~ Khalil Gibran

Give All You Can

A Penny Saved....

Saving prudently is difficult because it calls for a radical reorganization of our lives, and that’s exactly the point. It’s nothing less than a conversion experience as we reorient our whole existence around the value of God’s kingdom. - James A. Harnish Do not throw the precious talent into the sea: Leave that folly to heathen philosophers. Do not throw it away in idle expenses, which is just the same as throwing it into the sea. Expend no part of it merely to gratify the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eye, or the pride of life. ~ John Wesley from his Sermon “The Use of Money”

Earn All You Can

Gain all you can without hurting your soul, your body, or your neighbor’s soul or body. ~ John Wesley Never work just for money or for power. They won’t help save your soul or help you sleep at night. ~ Marian Wright Edelman Seeing our work as a calling from God puts the challenge to “earn all you can” in the context of the larger purpose of our work. Wesley’s instruction is not merely to earn money for its own sake but to earn it for the higher purpose of fulfilling God’s intention for our lives. ~ James A. Harnish

Mourning: Grief Gone Public

When tears come, I breathe deeply and rest. I know I am swimming in a hallowed stream where many have gone before. I am not alone, crazy, or having a nervous breakdown . . . My heart is at work. My soul is awake. ~ Mary Margaret Funk Mourning is showing and doing. When you cry, you are mourning. When you talk to someone else about the death, you are mourning. When you write in a journal, put together a photo display, or write a thank-you note for a casserole you received, you are mourning. ~ Dr. Alan Wolfelt

Let The Children Come

A Prayer from Native American Tradition O Great Spirit of our Ancestors, we raise the pipe to you, to your messengers the four winds, and to Mother Earth who provides for your children. Give us the wisdom to teach our children to love, to respect, to be kind to each other so that they may grow with peace in mind. Let us learn to share all the good things that you provide for us on this Earth.
