Psalm 46: Our Ultimate Security

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth.9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Selah — Psalm 46 I. The source of our securityII. The strength of our security Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. — Hebrews 12:28 III. The results of our securityIV. The gospel and our security We sing this psalm to the praise of God, because He is with us and powerfully and miraculously preserves and defends His church and His word against all fanatical spirits, against the gates of hell, against the implacable hatred of the devil, and against all the assaults of the world, the flesh, and sin. — Martin Luther on Psalm 46 Back to Bulletin

The Benefits of the Spirit in a fallen world

Shaun Rossi // The Gospel of JohnWe need all the benefits bought by Christ on the cross to be saved and to enjoy a relationship with the Father. What we need, God has supplied to us by the Holy Spirit! 1 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will ...

Mission 2025: Building Blocks of the Heart 6

Daniel Ottoson // The Heart of PrayerIntimate communion with our Heavenly Father is the place out of which all of the rest of our spiritual life flows. 5“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not ...

Shaun Rossi // The Heart of Mission & MealsThe meals of Jesus Christ and His church are an enactment of gospel grace, community and future. 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink. — Luke 7:34 & 5:33 Sermon OutlineI. Grace & the Mission of Meals 27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need...

Mission 2025: Building Blocks of the Heart 4

Shaun Rossi // The Heart of Accessibility, Disability & MinistryMephibosheth was pursued, welcomed and given access to eat at the king’s table with his brokenness, not after he was healed from it. 1 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” 4 The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” 5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. 6 And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to Da...

Mission 2025: Building Blocks of the Heart - 3. Obedience to God

Dave Pike // Building Blocks of the Heart 3. Obedience to God 1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines. 3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. 4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. 7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shie...

Mission 2025: Building Blocks of the Heart - 2. Time & Church

Shaun Rossi // Building Blocks of the Heart 2. Time & ChurchChurch is not another ball to juggle, but that which defines who you are and gives Christlike shape to the time you have been given. 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. — Ephesians 5:15-16 Sermon OutlineI. The Particular Times 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. — Ephesians 3:10 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light — Ephesians 5:8 20 And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the Lord.” And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar. 21 And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them. Mission 2025: Building Blocks of the Heart - 1. Giving

Shaun Rossi // Building Blocks of the Heart 1. GivingIf believers will give from a heart of biblical motive, in line with biblical principles and priorities, God will bless with His results. Sermon OutlineI. The Place of the Heart in Following Christ 43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. — Luke 6:43-45 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. — Hebrews 4:12 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. Mission 2025: Core Values 3. United in Creation

Shaun Rossi // Core Values: 3. United in Creation“United in Christ and community, we seek to join God on his mission to make himself known and enjoyed in all creation. By extending his grace and mercy in word and deed to our neighbors, we hope to see the growth of God’s kingdom and gospel-centered churches in Finland and beyond.” (From the UCC core values found at: www.ucclife) 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. — Colossian...

Shaun Rossi // Core Values: 2. United in Community “United in Community: Our identity in Christ binds us to a new community which is the context for our formation as disciples. We were made for relationship—with God, and with each other. Growth in our vertical relationship with Christ leads us to be horizontally bound together in loving community, demonstrating together the life-changing power of the gospel.” (From the UCC core values found at: www.ucclife) 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.
