When the Rooster Began to Crow

When Jesus was arrested and taken to the High Priest's residence, Peter and John followed. The disciples were scared; they feared for their own lives; they felt helpless to intervene with authorities. It was here in the High Priest's courtyard on that cold spring night that Peter, fearing for his life, denied knowing the Lord. It is something he quickly regretted and agonized over. As we look closely at this moment in Peter's life, we will see promise and hope for all of us.

The When or The Who?

After Jesus laid out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and teachers of the Law, the disciples asked Jesus about the future and when it would happen. Bible scholars have parsed Jesus' words and applied each point to either a historical event or to the future. And although a great deal of effort has gone into creating timelines of the events (the when), we need to look to Jesus (the who) for how His message is intended for us today.

During the Fourth Watch

After the miraculous feeding of the 5,000, Jesus sent his disciples out onto Lake Galilee while He went into the mountain to pray alone. In the early morning (during the Fourth Watch), Jesus walked on the water towards them. His disciples thought that the figure was a ghost, and fear gripped their hearts. But Jesus called out to them that it was indeed the Lord. This is when Peter asked to walk on the water to meet Him. We will study this story and see how it was of such encouragement to those experiencing persecution during the Early Church period.
