Dishonorable Passions

Homosexuality is wrong. Paul explains why in this text. It is a practice that runs contrary to nature, or the way God designed the world (the body) to work. How can Christians take a stance on this issue while also showing love and grace? This and other questions are answered in this sermon. Romans 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. Why is homosexuality wrong? How should Christians behave within a culture that affirms homosexuality as a valid alternative? What hope do homosexuals have?

Dishonorable Passions

God Gave Them Up

One of the key ways God judges sin now is by allowing sinners to continue in their sin. He gives them up to it and allows them to suffer the horrible consequences of it. Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due pe...

The Terrible Exchange

People are very much focused on light. Our houses are full of bulbs and are automobiles have high beams. Why do we love and need light so much? In Romans 1:21, Paul says that sinful people have foolish hearts that are darkened. In their darkness, they have “exchanged the glory of God” for idols (v. 23). Without light, people are unable to see the beauty and power of our Creator, and instead, they worship and serve the creature (v. 25). Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, na...
