Howard Marks on mastering the cycle

This podcast sees Guy Foster, Head of Research chatting to Howard Marks the founder and chairman of Oaktree Capital. Howard has been making the headlines recently by questioning the Fed’s latest rate cuts whilst most investors seem to be wanting more. That serves as a helpful intro to the topic of cycles which Howard has literally written a book since his last appearance on the Brewin Podcast. We discuss the different ways in which cycles can present themselves, how this influences investment positioning and what the risks could be at the moment. How is the increased use of technology affecting the investment environment and how can you test a managers’ ability to call cycles when they may not have been through a full one.

Liontrust Backing Growth Investments

It’s been another busy week in politics, however, in this latest Podcast we decide to alternate the focus back to investment. Difficult though Brexit is to avoid entirely, the main points of discussion in this recording are the merits of Growth investing relative to Value - a debate which continues to rage in investment circles – as well as a look at some specific companies that fall into this category such as Spirax Sarco and YouGov. Today’s host is Ben Gutteridge, Brewin’s Research Director, and in the hot seat is Anthony Cross, one the city’s most highly regarded fund managers, from Liontrust Asset Management.

Parliament’s back, so what?

With increasingly partisan views on Brexit and the respective parties’ policies on the subject we attempt to cut through the noise with Chris Hughes, former political researcher, now working for Cicero Group. We tackle this week’s big news, the Supreme Court decision that proroguing Parliament was not legal and how it affects the political situation. In relation to the ongoing Brexit negotiations we explore whether the Conservatives are actively seeking no deal, whether they have a proposal to replace the Northern Irish backstop and whether the EU will ultimately be sympathetic to their overtures. Crucially we discuss whether any deal could actually get through Parliament. We discuss the newly formed Brexit policies at the respective Labour and Liberal Democrat conferences and how these are likely affect the balance of voting intention in the UK. And ultimately we ask, when will a general election take place?

Jenna & John: Bonds for the long run

Bonds have had a stellar year so far as expectations of monetary policy have flipped dramatically more dovish. Not all bond fund managers have been able to capture that move, much to the frustration of their clients. Our guests in this podcast John Patullo and Jenna Barnard of Janus Henderson Investors have been in the right place so far this year so we ask them where the right place is to be going forwards. And where the opportunities are. On today’s podcast it will be Guy, John and Jenna.

A Brexit-Free Geopolitical Update with BCA Research

In this week’s Brewin Podcast Ben Gutteridge, Brewin’s Research Director, speaks to Matt Gertken, BCA Research’s Chief Geopolitical Strategist. The subject matter purposefully avoids the Brexit drama given our coverage last week and the fast-moving nature of the story and instead returns to US politics. The focus is on foreign policy, where we examine the prospects for a US-China deal and the motivations that drive success or failure, before turning to how both the US and Iran are likely to manage their own deteriorating relationship. In each instance we examine the potential investment implications. The final part of the conversation covers the 2020 US Presidential election and the route to a Trump victory, as well as some thoughts on how the Democrat Party are lining up their candidate and what chance he or she may have.

Hosting is Research Director, Ben Gutteridge, and he is joined by Head of Research Guy Foster along with our exciting new hire and Multi-Asset Strategist, Paul Danis.

Are European Equities off limits? - Aberdeen Standard Investments

In this week’s Brewin Podcast Ben Gutteridge, Brewin’s Research Director, speaks to Will James, the lead manager of ASI’s European Equity Income fund, on the case for investing in Europe. Clearly the news flow has been universally dreadful, but does this render European Equities as a ‘no go’ area, or are there pockets of value and, if so, where are they? Given Will’s role as an income manger, we also ask him where the most appealing dividend streams lie.
