E48: The Secret Investment Savvy Investors Make Millions From

We're talking in this episode about the asset class savvy investors are making millions from - startup investing. The likes of Uber, Netflix and thousands of startups you've never heard of have made overnight millionaires from people who took a £5k punt at some point in an early-stage company (probably little more than an idea at that point!). We discuss: - what is startup investing and why it's such a big deal - why are we even interested in this (not just the money) - how many startups you should invest in and how you can de-risk your investment to a fraction of what you invest using tax breaks - demystifying startup terminology (what on earth is a Series C round?!) - why valuation is not of primary concern in startup investing - what we look for in a startup (and why 95% of the deals we get never make it through) - where you can find those great startups (hint: not on public platforms like Seedrs!)

E47: The Islamic Philosophy of Business (Tafseer 18)

E46: 50% returns buying small businesses - and how you can too

I've been investigating the market for small businesses for around 2 years now. Small businesses offer a tremendous investment opportunity if you can acquire them and run them (or get someone to run it). I share with you my experience of the market, how the pricing works, where to find these small businesses, and why this is a BUYER's market. So whether you want to buy a business in order to quit your job and be your own boss, or whether 50% returns attract you, this episode is a must-listen. If you'd like us to really build out the content on this area, I need to hear your demand - drop me an email on mohsin@islamicfinanceguru.com to let me know!

E41: 5 reasons why interest is haram (Tafseer s.17)

We're taking a look at verses 2:175-179 - the verses forbidding interest. The 5 reasons are: 1. It is exploitative of the poor (as they are generally those who require debt) 2. Interest gives rise to an exploitative economic system even if a specific instance of a loan may not appear to be exploitative. 3. Money has no intrinsic value and so cannot be rented. 4. To try to rent "the value imbued within currency by others in society" is not (a) clear/certain; and (b) appears to be renting out something a lender has no right to be renting out. 5. lending money leads to a devaluation of the very thing being loaned (due to inflation).
