Chapter IX: The Rise of the Kingdom

Moses has died and been buried and a new leader, Joshua, prepares the people to take over the Promise Land. Joshua continues in the role of mediator between God and His people. He unites the various tribes into one force to achieve the conquest of all of Canaan. God calls upon Joshua to lead as Moses did, and Joshua is promised the support of God in his endeavors. After the death of Joshua, the people fall back into idolatry. The Canaanites bring them down over and over again through the example of their sinful practices. Few historic personalities have been called upon to accept a heavy burden of leadership under the conditions in which Moses was called.
