Omakase - Final

I’ve always been bad at telling you what’s going on behind the curtain. I always figured it was best not to inconvenience you with my problems. I realize now that I should’ve been more open; if anything, so that this video would not come as such a shock. I am not going to be posting much online anymore, and there will not be any more videos or episodes of the podcast. I am not “going on break”, because that implies I plan to come back and return to the rhythm of posting something new everyday or every week. That is not going to happen. I will now try to explain as clearly as I can why I’ve made this decision. I beg you to listen until the end. I have a lot to say. There are a lot of reasons. These last three months have been the hardest of all my life. Since July, I have been juggling personal tragedy, loss, financial difficulties, my own declining mental health, and all of that while trying to turn this channel around. My original plan was to write a writing advice book. I wanted to crystalize the best parts of my advice. Two drafts, several hundred pages later, and I have nothing to show for it. The only saving grace is that writing those two books made me realize there was something deeply wrong with me. When I finished the first incarnation and was looking to edit it, I realized just how negative it all was. The positivity that I’d started out with, the desire to inspire people to write, was all but gone. Those three hundred pages of “advice” were only proof of how depressed I am. My anxiety and depression have always been deeply interlinked. Looking over my diary entries for the last three months, there’s a single sentence I’ve scribbled over and over on the margins. “I’m so tired.” It’s probably impossible to understand without being on this side of the computer screen, but creating content for the internet is... exhausting. Since the very beginning, I’ve been spending a large portion of my daily life doing two things: trying to create positive content and trying to ignore the constant harassment. Things have always been this way, from all the way back when I was creating posts on Tumblr. The number of homophobic and transphobic comments I receive on a daily basis have only increased in the last couple years. It’s come to the point where the regular comments I get, not even praise, just regular comments, are a rare occurrence. Another thing that may not be immediately obvious unless you create content is that everything you do becomes some kind of possible post you can release to gain traction or followers. Trying to juggle these two things changes the way that you look at the world. Days off seem like missed opportunities, and every little thing that occurs in your life ends up funneled into your online presence. Even hobbies like playing video games or reading books becomes another part of work. I have been married for a year, and living with my wife has given me so much perspective on how this lifestyle is just not healthy for me. During a conversation with my wife, I broke down in tears when I realized I hadn’t taken a real day off in five years. Although I’d taken “days off”, and even “vacations”, I’d never stopped producing content. Even when I was on hiatus I didn’t stop. Last week, when our household was affected by the California Public Safety Power Shutoff, and we didn’t have electricity or internet, I was still looking for ways to create content. This is not healthy. The constant chase to make content, the never-ending stream of hateful comments, the pressure to release something every week, my social media addiction, my anxiety and my depression, all these things came to a head this week. Tired of this vicious cycle, I nearly deleted this channel, my blog, and all of my social media accounts. My wife, light of reason that she is, phrased it perfectly in just four words. “Max, you’re burnt out.” And so, I will not be making any more writing advice podcasts or videos on this channel for the foreseeabl
