Because of our business, because of the record industry, they have access to such a wealth of music that they don’t want to hear anything new. Henry Rollins: I've never heard Daft Punk; I've never heard a track of theirs in my life. They're the two guys with motorcycle helmets on? Rolling Stone: Yeah, they dress up like robots. Henry Rollins: You know what, you will take this any way you will. That to me is like Rolling Stone music. It's the shit that's in your magazine. And it's like, that world… I'm so glad that you all have found your people, but that world is so alienating to me. Anything that gets on the Grammys or the American Music Awards. . . like, was Miley Cyrus on the cover of your magazine? Rolling Stone: She was. Henry Rollins: Yeah, see, I like real music. John Coltrane's my favorite musician, what am I doing reading Rolling Stone? You know what I mean? This podcast - recorded a couple of days ago in front of Soccer Saturday on mute – contains two songs I first heard viaHenry Rollins. It might also contain music he finds alienating. All Back No Front #24

An All Back No Front podcast with old songs, new songs, and songs selected (months ago) by ABNF Guest Informant: Jesse Locke. As well as bringing music by New Fries and Johnny (not to be confused with Roger) de Courcy, Torontonian writer Jesse was good enough to join me in my Canadian hotel room to chat about the decline of blog culture and his work as part of Weird Canada, one of my favourite ever MP3 blogs. We also talk about the legacy of Women and how he’s become known in some quarters as The Saucer Guy, having obsessed over and written liner notes (not to mention an upcoming book) for cult 70s outfit Simply Saucer. There’s also sinister space discofrom Jascha Hagen, twin-guitar art rock from Seattle’s Neighbor, PAN-signed electronica courtesy of Liverpudlian Ling andan exhilaratingly angryslabof righteous fury (and probably the best thing I’ve heard this year) by Auckland’s Trust Punks. @jonhillcock, if you like. This is a good story about Bo Diddley and his beat. On this new podcast, my first for quite a while, there’s another, somewhat less poetic tale of the man’s stagecraft. You will also hear Diddley’s startling 1970 operatic funk face off with Cornelia Redmond alongside twelve other (newer) songs. Thanks for listening. @jonhillcock for anything. Front teeth whistling with every sibilant, my English teacher, Mrs Whittaker, taught us that the opening line of whatever you write is the most important. From "False happiness is on the rise, see the victims piled high" to “The sun comes out and sets a bad example", there are some choice opening lyrics on this podcast. That said, the first line you'll hear on ABNF #20 appears to be "The rap Kojak Telly Savalas, doped up off the trees like a walrus." I'm not sure Mrs Whittaker would have approved. Roughly this time last Monday afternoon I was having a word with myself in the Wild Bean Café at Sedgemoor services on the M5. Travelling northbound on the dark side of Bristol, broken, burnt and confused post-Glastonbury, (a sleeping girlfriend to my left happily ignorant of my galling misstep), I doubted if I’d get another podcast out before winter, let alone the following week. Thank god, then, for that bonnet-melting gridlock on the M25 which afforded me the time to whittle down 30 or so songs to 13, which I now present to you here in All Back No Front #19. For obvious reasons this podcast contains music that might be best heard in either a sun-blasted field full of drunk strangers, or at 4am on a makeshift club dancefloor scattered with wet mud and soft bark chips. Or in the car. All Back No Front #19 1. Dommengang ‘Everybody’s Boogie’ (Thrill Jockey) from album ‘Everybody’s Boogie’ 2. SylvanEsso ‘HSTK’ (Partisan) from album ‘Sylvan Esso’3. All Back No Front #18 By and large ABNF#18 broods a bit. Not me, I blether along like anything, but other than a couple of pacy points here and there the music maintains a fairly sombre tone. All I’m saying is – just like the sign said at the local baths: WALK, DON’T RUN. Like me, it’s not one for the treadmill. It is, however, a podcast with a theme. All Back No Front #18 includes a bunch of songs associated in some way with films, television or soundtracks. I explain more within, but on the whole it was a happy cinematic accident. @jonhillcockfor small points, jonhillcock@gmail.com for everything else. All Back No Front #18 1.
