About Us

Hip hop, jazz, and so much soul. Brought to you by: @drtysoap (Los Angeles) @djflowyo (Oakland) Initially born as Beat Swap Meet Vinyl Radio in 2014, The Dusty Handclap is a radio show that strives to support independent soul, jazz, funk, and hip hop artists. Like any DJ worth their weight, we started our journey on vinyl and still believe it to be the ideal medium for recorded music. That being stated, we understand the changing tides of both music recording and production and it is our aim to continue to evolve along with the music. We will always cherish vinyl, not only as a material but as a larger culture, but ultimately we are choosing to love music as a whole over any specific mediums. Music is the universal language- stay digging. thedustyhandclap@gmail.com

The Dusty Handclap No. 24 - Hype Raps by Jerry Nice

This episode of the Dusty Handclap features a guest mix from 'Straightin it Out' (SF) resident DJ Jerry Nice Straight up, Hype Raps is an ode to an era where moving the dance floor was king. In the late 80's through early 90's, a mixture of diverse sounds dictated the nightlife & hip-hop as a genre didn't shy away from finding influence within these various styles. Whether artists were inspired from trends of the time (James Brown samples, New Jack Swing, UK dance scene, Soulful House, etc.) or created a sound all their own, keeping things uptempo was a must. Many of these dance-focused tracks could be found as album cuts, b-sides, or remixes - with the occasional lead single getting heavy rotation as well (either organically or from label pressure). Like any form of popular music, it was up to the tastemakers to push the good & save the lame for the rest. In the same vein as his Dance R

The "Dilla" Handclap No. 21 (Hosted by DJ Flow)

I know the phrase "Dilla Changed my Life" is something that almost seems watered down and become somewhat of a fad, but it seems to be something I am comfortable with saying. My story is some what similar to all of the great stories heard from all of our heroes in hip-hop. Most of their first encounters of Jay Dee's music was through the circulation of his Slum Village demo tape distributed around small circles primarily via Houseshoes & Q-Tip. For my generation hip-hop was already around, but when you consider the actual time of understanding hip-hop, I was first introduced through a small vinyl collection from a close friend in High School, which included "Slum Village - Fantastic Vol 2". The "Intro" track into "Conant Gardens" into "I Don't Know" was a life changing sequence for me. Jam packed w/ Soulful rhodes, great mixing, thick drums, heavy bass lines, chopped drum breaks, rhythmi
