The following is a special edition of The Monroe News' Retro Headlines podcast; providing reactions of residents of Monroe County, Michigan, gave to The Monroe Evening News during July 1969 of the historic moonwalk. Retro Headlines July 1919

The headlines in Monroe, Michigan, during July 1919, included the naming of the local American Legion post in honor of of Carl F. Payson of Monroe, killed in the recent war. Taking a ride in an airplane was the latest trend in Monroe; and electricity lines were starting to be extended just past the city limits. A "skyrocket" struck a woman who was standing on the piers; she was not seriously injured. And residents of Petersburg and Deerfield were making investments into what would be called Deerfield Oil and Gas Company; in hopes of finding petroleum, natural gas or minerals underground. These were among the headlines in The Monroe Evening News; the Monroe News reprinted them as part of its "100 Years Ago" history column this month. 'Quality of Life' panel at Monroe County Chamber breakfast

A lively discussion about Monroe County's possibilities and its future spun into promises of follow up action when the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce held its breakfast program today. The panel speakers, under the topic of "Quality of Life" were Bart Lydy, president of the Home Builders Association of Monroe County; Jon Standifer, a real estate agent with Century 21 Allstar Real Estate Team; and Jason Morgan, unit supervisor at Sterling State Park.
