Love My Health Insurance (Politics)

It takes a while to get around to the ‘title segment’ of this rambling show. First, Gary talks about the little tube going up his nose for a pH test in his throat. Then he reviews the Cary Magazine feature article on three area podcasts, including this one. And there’s a minute or three on impeachment.LINKS:If you really want to know about that asteroid that didn’t wipe out all life on earth earlier this year:https://www.ibtimes.com/how-nasa-failed-protect-earth-getting-hit-asteroid-2822879https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7438This show on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9BFt_fezRKAThe TTS web site is: https://TriangleTalkShow.com

Go check your newsstand for the September issue of Cary Magazine, and somewhere after the fashion feature and maybe a restaurant review, there will be a little story about us. Sure, we were hoping for a cover… maybe next year.Meanwhile, in this episode, Cary Magazine Senior Editor Amber Keister joins us in the Studio in the Bonus Room Above the Garage on the north side of Cary (at the foot of Mount Belzoni) for a talk about journalism, the magazine, and stuff Gary’s missed in 30 years of living in the Triangle. The story is on the Cary Magazine Web Site.YouTube video of this show: https://youtu.be/060CFeEJ6dgTTS web site: https://TriangleTalkShow.com

My Vote Counts, Right? .... RIGHT!?! (Civics Lesson)

If you are a voter in North Carolina, Lynn Bernstein has your back. Lynn is on the Election Protection Committee of the League of Women Voters of Wake County. Her specialty is voting machines, with an eye on making sure that the vote you cast is the vote that is recorded and counted. The state Board of Elections is in the process of certifying what voting machines the counties can use in 2020 and for the next decade or so. Vendors are offering a variety of devices, some fancy and high-tech, and some pretty darn simple. Turns out that “pretty darn simple” is the safest, easiest and cheapest way to go, with an emphasis on this phrase: Hand Marked Paper Ballots. And Lynn should know. Her background as an aerospace engineer means she understands the geek side of elections, from Russian hacking to hanging chads. That in fact is what voters in Wake and Durham counties have been using for years. But that doesn’t mean that’s what the politicians like. Many of the other counties in North...

Comedy 2-Nite: John Poveromo - TTS 65 (Entertainment)

EJohn Poveromo is a comedian on ‘the circuit’, appearing tonight (Thursday, July 25 as I type this) at The Pit in Chapel Hill. John’s publicist somehow found the Triangle Talk Show and ‘booked’ John here, even after I explained that we have practically no audience, and John still agreed to appear. We had (I think) a great conversation. I guess you’ll be the judge of that.Links:John’s web site: http://johnpoveromo.net/The Pit: https://thepit-chapelhill.com/The Gerry Todd Show “VJ” Parody from SCTV: https://youtu.be/VD80QHZputQ?t=51This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VMb80I81eREThe TTS web site is: http://TriangleTalkShow.com

Citizenship Test - TTS 64 (Civics)

Amid all the noise and fury about immigration, the Trump administration announced they would be changing the test given to immigrants seeking citizenship. Gary takes the test (twice). Also, a no-hands stand-up, a bit on the ongoing NC Gerrymandering trial, and how Gary can’t remember the Apollo 11 moon landing (and almost everything else).Links:Washington Post anxiety-inducing fitness test: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/this-anxiety-inducing-fitness-test-purports-to-tell-you-how-long-youll-live-we-investigated/2019/03/18/0a1d06fe-4035-11e9-9361-301ffb5bd5e6_story.html?utm_term=.4866f4d1c466NC Gerrymandering Trial - WRAL streaming video (search): https://www.wral.com/search/?jump=1&qs=gerrymanderingIf that link doesn’t work, this’ll get you to “Day Two” with more links from there: https://www.wral.com/day-2-nc-panel-considers-challenge-to-voting-maps/18513095/Flashbulb Memories: 10 Historic Events that Everyone Remembers: https://blog.myheritage.com/2018/04/f...

Ssshhharlotte - TTS 63 (Choice)

On June 24, 2019, the Charlotte City Council passed an amended noise ordinance, prohibiting amplified sound within 150 feet of churches, schools, and health care facilities. In practice, it will mostly affect the noisy protests that regularly occur in front of the city's abortion clinics. The ordinance does not limit protesting immediately in front of the clinics – it only limits amplified speech and loud noise. In this episode, we'll assault your ears with a few minutes of those protests from Charlotte, and another few minutes of our home-grown protests at a clinic in Raleigh, so you can get an idea of what the Charlotte City Council was considering (and what women seeking abortions have to confront as they enter and leave the clinics). Then we've got a half hour of tightly edited comments from the Charlotte City Council meeting where the public made comments before the Council voted. The 'public' consisted mostly of anti-abortion protesters, countered by a much smaller group of pro...

Joe Parrish for NC House (District 56) - TTS 62 (2020)

Joe Parrish will be a candidate for the North Carolina House seat in NC District 56, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. Eventually we get around to talking about that. We begin with Joe’s participation in NC Democratic politics since he was a teen, and his support for a Transgender caucus (separate from the broader LGBTQ caucus) in the Democratic Party. Veto NOverride Part TWO- TTS 61 (Choice)

In PART ONE we looked at activity surrounding the ‘debate’ and vote on the NC House Republican’s failed attempt to override Governor Cooper’s veto of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (Senate Bill 359) . Part TWO is the whole ‘debate’ . It runs about an hour. Several Republicans speak passionately (maybe a little cynically?) about the bill, while a lone Democrat pretty much demolishes their argument with logic. No minds (or votes) were changed. It’s all ‘more of the same’, so Gary adds some color commentary in an attempt to get you to watch this half of the episode.LINKS:ABC11 WTVD Facebook Live Stream of the House debate (without Gary’s commentary): https://www.facebook.com/ABC11/videos/326421328308364/YouTube video of this episode: https://youtu.be/jDkTOTCi_xETTS Web Site: https://TriangleTalkShow.com
