Episode 48 Crossover: the Mythbusting

Hey True Believers! The Midnight Express crew (Rose & BK) are joined by Terry 'Hates On Lacrosse' (from Mage: the Podcast) to talk crossovers. Yes we have another podcaster crossing over onto the episode on cross-overs (it's all very meta, and we're expecting both Renown and Paradox for this). Failing to make Terry flee after facing the horror of 'The Question', we plunge into the main topic. After establishing the types of crossovers and what players and STs can expect, we examine five 'myths' - labeling each of them 'Confirmed', 'Plausible', or 'Busted' whilst offering our own experience. Stay tuned for the follow-up episode over at Mage: the Podcast. There were a lot of neat resources mentioned in the show from podcasts (Mage, Werewolf: the Podcast, and Walking Away From Arcadia), individual episodes (Episode 21: Dark alliance Vancouver, Dice Pool Podcast: Session 0, and Darling Roses' appearance on Mage), and resources (White Wolf Wikia, and Facebook Groups below). Episode 47 - Werewolf Storyteller's Handbook [Companion Reader]

Rose and BK are summoned to the monthly Moot to howl at the moon, and review the Werewolf Storytellers Handbook First Edition. Despite a tangent about Michael Kaluta's art (I couldn't locate his folio in electronic format, but here are his M20 Posters), they stay true to the path, discussing the use of the Hero's Journey, Auspice Journeys, evoking a sense of smell, Kami, and supporting anecdotes from their games to illustrate the guide in practice. BK's Storyteller Vault titles can be found here. The book spirits venerated in this episode can be summoned thusly: Werewolf Storytellers Handbook (First Edition) Kinfolk: Unsung Heroes Possessed Graceful, Wicked Masques Drums around the Fire and the Nunnehi are found in The Changeling Players Guide. Join us next time for Episode 48, where anything could (and might very well) happen. Hosts: BK, and Rose.

Episode 46 - You might also like... Symbaroum

In the first of an infrequent series, the Midnight Express Podcast delves into other RPGs, movies, and popular media that can inspire your oWoD games, or provide some variety at your table. In the inaugural episode, the Swedish dark fantasy game 'Symbaroum' comes under the spotlight; BK and Wendell brave the horrors of old Symbar, stride into the darkness of Davokar and unearth the roots of the game. They explore various aspects of the game from character creation, to game mechanics, and the importance of mood, theme, and story. Wendell points to Origin: Spirits of the Past for further inspiration, BK can't pronounce Modiphius to save his life (he'll do better next time), and they both agree that art like this, this, and this are reasons enough to buy to game. The books mentioned in the podcast were: Symbaroum RPG Core Book (English) Advanced Players Guide (English) Monster Codex (English) See you next time as we return to the World of Darkness and explore another aspect of Storytel...

Episode 45 - The World of Darkness is...

Wendell returns in this episode to revisit the foundation laid down in Episode 28 with BK. Together, they discuss how existentialism is an integral part of the oWoD, particularly as it applies as a lens for understanding motivations behind fear, and character development. The hosts draw on their own gaming experiences to illustrate the points, offering both a micro- and macro-view of chronicle design, and avenues for expanding the options in any given scene. During the episode, Wendell mentioned Hollow Earth Expeditions, we pointed to the forthcoming Chicago By Night from Onyx Path, and BK briefly mentioned the Symbaroum RPG. Join the Midnight Express Podcast for Episode 46, in which Wendell and BK launch the infrequent series 'You might also like...'. Hosts: Wendell_Burke, and BK.

Rose mentioned the Faerie Worlds event, we both spent time admiring the Changeling Journals at Redbubble, and pointed listeners to the Storytellers Vault (BK's titles can be found here). Originally published as Mirage Arcana Episode 19 (back when Gogol Fangs-First was but a cub), this episode brings an interview with Teeuwynn Woodruff into the Midnight Express playlist. Episode 42 - Designing a Changeling Chronicle

BK is joined by Rachel who has worked with By Night Studios and is the author behind Rose City By Night (among other Storyteller Vault titles) in an experimental episode. Over the course of the episode, they design and develop a Changeling: the Dreaming chronicle set in the 'happiest place on earth' exploring the urban myths, and seedier side of a once-magical place. Topics such as giving characters choice, designing antagonists, placing meaningful NPCs, cross-over potential, and developing engaging locations are all covered as the free-flowing conversation applies a World of Darkness lens to the theme park. The universal need for Storytellers to be given 'a hug and a cup of tea' is also discussed. We also mentioned Veil of Night (for Vampire), and the website Behind the Name. Make sure that you check out Rachel's work; she can also be found on Twitter via @Stolen_Fire In Episode 43, BK will draw an interview episode from the archives, bringing it under the Midnight Express banner, ...

Episode 41 - Dreaming of Oblivion: Guildbook Sandmen [Reader's Companion]

Rose and BK descend into the underworld to explore an much-underestimated Guild and draw the secrets of Phantasm from the Dream Union. They explore the role of the Sandmen, the promise they offer to the Restless, and the strange but compelling relationships of trust they need to survive. Also included is a discussion on the nature of Sandmen Ferrymen, and how Fetters can add depth to your game. There's lots of crossover with Changeling: the Dreaming (and a little Mage) that shows the potential of this book. You can pick up your copy of Guildbook: Sandmen hereThe journals we mentioned are at the RedBubble Store, and Wraith 20 is now available digitally and via print-on-demand. Episode 40 - Art, Life, and Changeling [Interview with Wendell_Burke]

Welcome back classic World of Darkness fans! The Midnight express releases the fortieth episode in style, kicking back with long-time listener and co-host Wendell_Burke. In this Cafe Car, we get to know Wendell a little better, and spend the bulk of the episode discussing the effect that producing art has on Wendell's interpretation of Changeling, and his style. We discuss ideas for integrating the creation of art, the cultivation of Dreamers, and the role of Glamour in Changeling chronicles and introduce some of the 'big questions' that can be tackled in your game. At the beginning of the episode I mention the V20 Hardback Notebooks available from the Red Bubble store. Since the time of recording a number of new notebooks have been added including some of the Bloodlines. Most importantly, I wanted to thank Nate from 25 Years of Vampire: the Masquerade. You'll have heard us mention this podcast in glowing terms (you need to check it out - right now, go on). We had a lot of audio iss...

Episode 39 - The Risen [Reader's Companion]

Hey now, what’s that sound? Wraiths are rising from the ground? BK and Pete return to the show to discuss wombats, ashtrays, Stygian Black Ops, Batman, Ghost Rider, and The Risen (well, mostly the Risen – all the others are incidental). After covering the obvious similarities between this book and a Corvid-themed movie, they tackle the difficult questions about running chronicles with Risen, and how to use them at the table. They also pick up a few of the smaller threads in the book and develop these into more fulsome ideas. The duo also discuss the links between Risen, and Geist: the Sin Eaters, reflecting that perhaps osme of the aspects of Risen are addressed in the new World of Darkness, especially those relating to societies of, and for, Risen.
