The Sermon On The Mount: Seek God"s Global Kingdom

Jay Greer 11/03/19 Matthew 6:33 states that we are to "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness..." In this week"s passage Jay Greer, pastor of the Mustard Seed Network"s church plant in Tokyo, tells of the importance of spreading the Kingdom of God here on Earth. As we make this our first priority, God will take care of each of our needs--He is a loving father, and will care for us!

The Sermon On The Mount: Investing

Phil Heller 10/27/19 What do you treasure most? Are you investing in things that will never rot, or be destroyed? In this week"s passage, we learn the importance of investing in God"s kingdom versus focusing all of our energies on amassing wealth here on Earth. As with the other passages we have studied, God is MOST concerned with our heart, and our intent. Jesus points out that we cannot serve two masters--if God isn"t at the heart of what we do (especially with our possessions) then we will end up as slaves to another master.

The Sermon On The Mount: Motivation

Phil Heller 10/20/19 Jesus’ words in this week’s passage are some of the most penetrating of the entire Sermon on the Mount. We’re forced to ask, “Why do I do this?” and “How am I doing it?” and “For whom am I doing this thing?” Jesus brings these questions to three activities: giving, praying and fasting. Be prepared to ask hard questions and allow Jesus to search out and bring to light your motivations. And be prepared to see what it looks like to do these things and others in a way that honors God and leads to a flourishing life.

The Sermon On The Mount: Radical Love

Andrew Bondurant 10/13/19 Jesus says in Matthew 5 that he has not come to abolish the law, but then a few sentences later he lays out a radical "new" way to treat the people that mistreat us! The fact is, God is interested in our heart, as well as our actions; the WHOLE person is important to him. The law placed limits on people to ensure that vigilantism and gross retaliation didn"t occur--now, Jesus tells us that God"s heart desire is that we treat everyone with the same love and grace that he shows to us!

The Sermon On The Mount: Freely Limited

Ross Langston 10/06/19 As Jesus continued to share with the crowd that gathered on the mountainside the topic changed from purity to adultery-- Jesus spoke directly into a hotly debated topic of the day, as he addressed the divorce epidemic that was underway in ancient Israel. He spoke of commitment, contentment and covenant.

The Sermon On The Mount: Purity

Phil Heller 9/29/19 Jesus addressed several aspects of the Jewish Law during His sermon, and instead of releasing people from their obligation to the law, he painted even stricter views on each of the laws he mentioned. Adultury, for example, was more than having sexual relations with another person outside of marriage, it was even LOOKING at another person with lewd intent. Jesus pointed out that as we draw closer to God, those desires fall under His control--he alone can cleanse us of our sin and give us the means to overcome it!
