[BIZ TIPS] Harness Your Creativity: Switching From Consumer to Creator

We're talking all about why it's so important to limit how much info you're consuming, but first.... Introducing...PODCASTING FOR IMPACT: The Course. This is the project I've been working on for months, and it's going to teach you how to not only bring your podcast to life, but to increase your visibility, promote yourself and your podcast, use it to grow your business in a strategic way, and most importantly, help you to have a massive positive impact on the very people you're trying to reach that need to hear from you. All the details here! Ok, so what's the deal with this whole consuming vs. creating situation? If you want to be an entrepreneur, you MUST make the switch from consumer to creator. To see a problem and create the solution to solve it for someone. That requires a dedication to your craft, and it’s fatiguing to constantly be looking around you and seeing what everyone else is up to. Not only that, but it causes us to fall into the trap of believing that everything has already been said, or done better, than we could do it ourselves. We can get stuck in the rabbit hole of consuming information and never actually *doing* anything with any of it. It comes down to this: Who do you want to be? The person that read every blog post and listened to every podcast and bought a library worth of books? Or the person who actually did something with what they learned and the knowledge and expertise that they had? You get to decide. And until you make the switch, you'll be stuck in the cycle of consuming. How to Have Greater Impact in the World

**Introducing…Podcasting with Impact, your complete roadmap to launching and growing a successful podcast, including the 3 secrets no one talks about when it comes to podcasting. I’m giving you everything you need to know to bring your podcast to life, make incredible connections with guests and listeners alike, and be able to have the positive impact you want and spread your message in the best possible ways. This is what you’ve been waiting for, because podcasting is in its’ infancy stages right now and there’s never been a better time to jump on board. I’ve got you covered with this training, and you even have the choice between video or audio only, because I know you’re on the go and like to be able to listen anywhere. GRAB IT NOW!** Let's get into today's episode: all about IMPACT. First of all, everyone is going to have a different definition and idea of what having an impact looks like. But what I want to underscore most with this episode is that having an impact isn't something reserved for those with massive audiences or a huge business that they're looking to scale. Impact can come from something as simple as smiling at someone. From making somebody feel less alone, teaching a friend a new skill, from a teacher believing in a student when they're having trouble believing in themselves. The smallest actions can change lives, and you have the ability to inflict change. To make a difference to one single person out there, to change the world on a more global level, to do whatever you put your mind to. You are far more wildly capable than you give yourself credit for, and never underestimate your own abilities. Today we're talking about: Examples of having an impact in your everyday life Fully grasping how the smallest actions can mean the most to someone, and how even things like carefully choosing where to spend your time, energy and money can create shifts Connection = impact Some ideas around how to have an impact on a more global scale and what you can do to get there Everyone is a teacher and has some sort of skill that someone else would love to learn Why I disagree with the idea that we all have a responsibility to share our stories The differences between being uncomfortable and discomfort, and why that has everything to do with impact REFERENCES Greta Thunberg Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity Episode #142, Impact, Optimism & Chasing the Bright Side with Jess Ekstrom Episode #119, Is Podcasting Really the New Blogging? The Fear of Success is Real: Everything Has a Price

I have a confession to make: I’ve been hiding. Much as it might seem as though I’ve been putting myself out there more than ever, and I have been, I’ve also struggled with crushing levels of resistance to everything that I want to do and know that I am capable of accomplishing the past couple of months in particular. Leveraging my own extremely personal story into the spotlight has been daunting, and with that has brought a great deal of fear around all of the potential new issues and expectations that can come with that, along with hitting new levels of success. Everyone has a wildly different definition of success, but many times what stops us from reaching it is the fear of everything that can come with it. We’re often going to feel resistance come up. Steven Pressfield in The War of Art refers to Resistance as its’ own entity, something that will always appear when we’re doing some new, something worth doing. This is because our brains are trained to keep us comfortable, a...

Alone & Lonely Are Not Synonymous: Loneliness is a State of Mind

Let's face it: most of us are feeling lonelier overall than we ever have before. But sometimes being alone and being lonely are often confused. What we sometimes forget is that we can be very happy alone. But usually when we’re lonely, we want something to shift or change. The sad irony in loneliness is that it makes us feel like we’re alone and isolated in feeling that way. And yet, so many of us feel lonely that if we opened up about it more and did something about it, we wouldn't feel nearly so alone. Loneliness comes with significant health effects, and low social connection carries similar health risks to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. It can lead to depression, make it more difficult to interact with others (which is of course, more sad irony) because it makes lonely people more sensitive to social situations and the perceived stakes when having those kinds of interactions, increased risk of heart disease, and can lead to unhealthy habits when it comes to how we eat, move an...

[BIZ TIPS] Show Your Face Without Fear: Getting on Live Video

You know I’m still all about podcasting, but video is still important, especially for Instagram stories. That doesn’t mean you have to be doing video trainings or Youtube videos, but you still need to be showing your face. People need to get to know you, AND podcasting isn’t necessarily for everyone, though it can be an even better way to dip your toe in the water (one major bonus of podcasting is that you can record in your robe andnot care - though I've done videos in my robe too!) More than half the battle with video is simply showing up, much like anything else, because you'll never get any better if you don't try. What are you afraid of when it comes to video? Being judged by others? Or judging yourself? I assure you that NO ONE else is paying as much attention to you as you think they are, they're far too concerned with their own stuff. The #1 thing I get told about why people appreciate me, my brand, my podcast and my Instagram stories? I'm relatable. That isn't an acciden...

Positive Reinforcement Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

I don't agree with everything that Gary Vaynerchuk puts out into the world, but this Instagram post he did really struck a deep chord: “You’re addicted: To people telling you you’re pretty. To people telling you you’re talented. To teachers telling you you’re a good student. To opinions. The reason so many struggle with negativity is because they overvalue positive reinforcement.” -Gary Vaynerchuk The problem is that when we give SO much weight to the positive reinforcement, we’re affected even more deeply when we get negative reinforcement or feedback. I'm ALL for positive reinforcement and praise. But it's like anything else: too much and it becomes unhealthy. We need to continue to be motivated by intrinsic praise because when no one is clapping for you, are you going to be able to keep going otherwise? Are you going to be satisfied with knowing that you did a good job, without someone else telling you? Are there things out there that are worth doing even if you knew you wo...

The Need for Closure is An Inside Job

If you're like most people, you've tried to find closure at one point or another in your life. Whether it's the ending of a relationship, being ghosted, losing a friendship unexpectedly or perhaps a job, we seek closure so that we can try to find ways to move on. But it's easier said than done. Closure has come up a LOT for me this year, both in my own personal life and lately, with many of the people closest to me who are struggling to find their own closure as well. Part of the issue is that we often look outside of ourselves for closure. We search for it in the very people who hurt us, because we want to better understand. We think that the understanding will grant us the closure we so desperately crave. The thing is, we need to re-examine how we look for closure, because what we often realize is that we can be given all of the answers in the world to try to better understand a situation, but it doesn't mean that understanding will buy us closure. We write stories in our heads of...

[BIZ TIPS] How An Awkward Introvert Makes Friends Around the Globe

BY POPULAR REQUEST:I'm breaking apart a topic that I've been asked about by so many people in recent months and how I seem to make friends fairly rapidly and seemingly everywhere I go in my global travels. I've even surprised myself at times, because I fully identify as being not only an introvert (which is not synonymous with shy, by the way), but I'm the first one to say that I'm usually the most awkward person in the room. At least, that's how I feel about myself, ha! I've classified this episode under the Saturday business/podcasting episodes, but everything I talk about today could apply to anyone wanting to make new connections of any kind. I want to make something very clear: f it ever looks like things come super easily to me socially, don’t be fooled. Sometimes they do, but: A) That didn’t come naturally to me and took many years of practice. B) I often still feel very socially awkward and will replay cringe-worthy moments in my head later on, having those “WHY DID YOU C...

Impact, Optimism & Chasing the Bright Side with Jess Ekstrom of Headbands of Hope

I have to say, I've had incredible guests on this show, but you are in for an absolute treat today! My (now) friend Jess Ekstrom and I started chatting after connecting on Instagram a while back. She came across my podcast, I loved her mission, and it was a regular Instagram modern-day romance in the DMs. And now I have the chance to introduce you to her and her incredible story and mission! Jess Ekstrom is the founder and CEO of Headbands of Hope, a company she started as a junior in college in 2012. For every headband sold, a headband is given to a child with cancer. Her first brush with success was selling all of her toys on eBay when she was twelve. Since then, Jess and her company have been featured on Today and Good Morning America and in Seventeen, Vanity Fair, Forbes, and People. More importantly, they have donated hundreds of thousands of headbands reaching every children’s hospital in the United States and in fifteen countries.
