About Us

Life's New Normal Podcast introduces you to amazingly ordinary people who have overcome tremendous adversity and still find it in themselves to give back to others.Have you ever felt you were called to do more than what you are doing?Do you wish that it was you who was inspiring others?Have you ever wanted to create a new normal for yourself or those around you?Well if you answered yes to those questions you are in the right spot, and if you answered no, well, you are probably in self-denial. My name is John Register, Paralympic Silver Medalist, and I am your host.My StoryI am a four-times all-American; two-times Olympic trials participant and U.S. Army Gulf War Veteran, who sustained an injury resulting in the amputation of my left leg. With the support of faith, family, and friendships, I hurdled the adversity and created a new normal mindset.Armed with this resilient mindset, I began swimming for physical therapy and wound up getting so fast I qualified for and swam in the Paralympic Games (games for people with physical disabilities). Four years later, I learned how to run again and became the first American to long jump over 17 feet without a leg or a knee and captured the silver medal at the Paralympic Games in the process. Now, as a keynote speaker and change management expert, and host of this podcast, "Life's New Normal," I am honored to introduce you to amazing ordinary people who turned their obstacles into opportunities. Their mindset is to live greater tomorrow than today. In short, they share with us how they created life's new normal.I hope you are inspired by each guest and take away tangible action steps to overcome the obstacles in your life.If you would like to learn more about me please visit my website johnregister.com and sign up for all my social media channels there.See you "On Air"-JohnJohn

S3 EP 13 The Force | Charlynda Scales, Veteran, "I Don't Fit in Your Box!"

"I am not a young pretty girl who needs advice on what to do after college. I am a Clemson grad and have a masters degree. I am a military veteran with over 12 years of service. I own two companies. I am an only child and caretaker of my parents. I have been through a lot. Not 23 years or 25 years....but 37. I am constantly humbled that I don't look like all the things I have been through." These words were written by Charlynda Scales, a dynamic motivational speaker, brand ambassador, Air Force Veteran, social media influencer, and the founder and CEO of Mutt’s Sauce, LLC, a company that makes “the sauce for every meal.” Mutt's Sauce was the Grand Prize Winner of Bob Evan's Farms' 2017 Heroes to CEOs Contest. You know I had to reach out to her after I saw that post on LinkedIn. She bore her soul. I saw through the words and knew there was a story behind it. Today, you have the opportunity to hear this amazing story with some great messages to apply in your life as well. The Clems...

S3 E12 Managing Predictability with Athletic Trainer Phenom Darryl Conway

Darryl Conway says he is lucky. But when you send out 30 letters to 30 NFL teams and happen to get a break, that is not luck. That is dogged determination. His insights into taking advantage of an opportunity is a resounding lesson for us all. Mr. Conway is theSenior Associate AD and Chief Health & Welfare Officer at the University of Michigan. His advice to young students is to askquestions, then ask questions from the answers, and ask more questions. This is one way Darryl Conway distinguisheshimself among his peers in the AT profession. It is what moved him from watchingKeoki Kamau speed tape at the Art Monk football camp to sitting with the athletic trainers of the NY Jets to writing the in-stadium emergencyprotocol for the NFL, all before he was 25 years old. His questions took him to work with the elite police force SWAT teams in Maryland and have him as a highly sought after leadership speaker. You do not want to miss this episode. S3 E10 Just Plain Scrappy. The Unlikely Olympian, Kim Conley

Kim Conley is just plain scrappy. While every runner has a unique story, Kim's journey to the world of professional running does not resemble the path of many of her fellow competitors. Growing up in Santa Rosa, California Kim's track career began in 1998 when she joined the Santa Rosa Express Track Club. She went on to compete at UC Davis, but despite steady improvement over her years as an Aggie, she graduated in 2009 with only one national-level collegiate appearance to her name. Determined to improve, Kimemerged definitively on the professional running scene at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. In one of the most dramatic races of the meet, Kim mounted a comeback effort over the final lap, culminating in a sprint down the home stretch to move from 5th place to a 3rd place. Kim's podium finish, combined with a race result that fell .21 seconds inside the Olympic A standard, solidified a qualifying spot on the US Olympic team. S3 E8 Contextual Intelligence with Dr. Matthew Kutz

What is most the poisonous thought you have ever had? Strange question, huh? Have you ever thought about that? You should, because, your thoughts matter. I am not talking about negative self-talk. I am talking about the kind of thinking that is so nuanced and so sinister that we are not even aware it is there or what it is doing to us. I am convinced that the refusal to honor someone else’s success or accomplishments is a poison that subtly, yet very conspicuously thwarts everything we try to do. These are the words of Dr. Matthew Kutz, speaker, author, Fulbright Scholar, and Professor. Matt is passionate about helping others achieve high-level leadership and outstanding organizational performance. His teaching, research, and leadership development interests are in reaching the highest levels of corporate performance and facilitating all facets of leadership and change initiatives. S3 E7 Discover The Outward Mindset with The Arbinger Institute's James Ferrell

The Arbinger Instituteprovides training, consulting, coaching, and implementation tools that move individuals, teams, and organizations from the default self-focus they call an inward mindset to the results focus of an outward mindset. My guest Jim Ferrell is one of the managing founders of the organization that is rapidly growing around the world. The Arbinger Institute was founded in 1979 by Dr. C. Terry Warner, the scholar who solved the central problem at the heart of the human sciences: the problem of self-deception. That work revealed two distinct mindsets from which people and organizations operate—a self-focused inward mindset and an others-inclusive outward mindset—and the path to sustainably changing mindset and results. Today, Jim unpacks for us our self-deceiving behaviors (going inward) and how to turn outward. Listen, when I read the books, Leadership and Self-Deception, The Anatomy of Peace and The Outward Mindset, I began calling people to apologize for my behavior...

S3 EP 6 Rediscovering Self - With Guest Chantal Aston

What do you do if the very thing you were called to do in life were taken away? Today, I chat with guest Chantal Aston on how she was able to create her new normal after her life took a different direction. Her husband was killed in a tragic accident leaving her to live life as a single mom with a 5-year-old daughter. But despite it all, she survived and later thrived. Today, she appreciates life and challenges us to do the same. Chantal Aston began wowing audiences in the early 1990’s with her rich andsmoky alto voice, performing regular club dates in the vibrant Queen St. Westarea, home to Toronto’s dynamic arts and music scene. S3 E5: Hurdling Adversity - Create Life's New Normal with John Register

How does one bounce back from being an Olympic track and field hopeful and Army Officer Candidate one day and becoming an amputee the next? John Register knows the answer to that question all too well because, well, this is John's story. "It is all about employing one's resilience," Register says. Despite John's devastating setback, he hurdled his adversity and succeeded over it. Within 23 months he competed in the 1996 Paralympic Games n Atlanta, GA (games for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairment) as a swimmer.
