S2E5 - The One Where We Find the Worst Dad in the Wizarding World

S02E05 of Melting Potter delves into chapter five of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Whomping Willow. First, we try to wrap our heads around the fact that the adults don’t seem more concerned that Harry and Ron disappeared with a flying car and were nowhere to be seen at the feast. Then, we’re appalled that a tree seems to be more important than them, only to admit Ron was reckless and his plan was weak. Speaking of weak plans, Lucius’ plan to get the diary to Hogwarts, although ultimately successful, was not the best. Plot convenience much? We imagine what would have happened if Ginny really had forgotten to pack the diary, we look at how 3 adults (Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape) decide to handle the flying car situation, and we get into Harry’s privilege and how he has come to expect preferential treatment knowing he will never get into that much trouble. As a bonus, we have a spirited debate over who the worst father in the Wizarding World is. Expect random D&D tangents, multiple F bombs, and an interesting theory regarding whether the rumour of Snape wanting the Dark Arts position was actually spread intentionally by Dumbledore and Snape.

S2E4 - The One Where We Talk Politics in the Wizarding World

Melting Potter episode 4 discussing chapter 4 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, At Flourish and Blotts - it’s a long one! We talk at length about Wizarding World politics such as disposing of dark magical artefacts vs. preserving them, regime changes and how the opposition vilifies the ruling party, and how ordinary people can have no choice but to become accomplices and how we shouldn’t judge them. for that We also discuss the connection between what’s happening in the Wizarding World and what happened in post World War II Germany, including the importance of bearing witness and of keeping tangible proof so as not to give deniers a chance to say some things never happened, and how persecuting people who are just nostalgic about old times can be a double edged sword. In our talk, we touch upon Molly’s attitude toward Gilderoy and whether it’s meant to be endearing or signal a larger problem in her marriage. We also include a POV retelling through Lucius’ eyes, and we discuss Arthur’s internalised sense of worthlessness when it comes to the Malfoys. On a lighter note, Harry is being unnecessarily sneaky and we try to figure out why on earth would Dumbledore hire Gilderoy. Finally, are Madame Hooch and Professor Sprout in a loving relationship? We think so!

S2E3 - The One Where We All Love Molly

What about Molly Weasley? In episode 3 of season 2 of Melting Potter, we analyze the happenings at the burrow through Molly's perspective. Join us as we empathize with the most badass witch & mother in the Wizarding World. What you can hear in this episode: Miriam impersonating Molly in a very cute bit that she improvised. Bogdan & Andreea discuss how entitled the Weasleys are and Andreea empathizes with Ron (shocking, I know!) about how Harry's enthusiasm at seeing the magical home of the Burrow changes Ron's perspective over his whole life. There's a lot to dig into this episode so buckle up, wands at the ready, let's go!

S2E2 - The One with Princess Harry and Ronald the Brave

In s02e02 of Melting Potter, we discuss chapter two of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, “Dobby’s Warning.” Since the focus is very much on Dobby in this chapter, we look at it from his perspective, but not before treating you to a summary of the chapter in true Disney style. We wonder why Dobby cares so much about what happens to Harry (is it pragmatism? does Harry’s inner nobleness inspire marginalised creatures?) and how he comes to justify his actions and methods since he obviously goes beyond the limits of what is acceptable as a victim of oppression himself. Speaking of oppression (fun!), we discuss Harry’s privilege and his fleeting attempt to help others who are oppressed, only to change his mind when he finds out the individual case is actually part of systematic oppression. Since both characters resort to questionable methods in this chapter, we try to see how we would resolve the conflict between them. We know the rationalist approach doesn’t work with Harry, but will thinking about moments in his life when he also acted rash toward well meaning people help? Will taking a moment to understand how similar they both are work? Let’s see!

S2E1 - The One with New Beginnings

We’re baaaaack! We’re starting season 2 in full force with the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, “The Worst Birthday.” For season 2, we’re switching things up a bit. We’ll still have chapter summaries but done in a different style every time, to which we’ll add the events of the chapter seen from a particular character’s POV. Sometimes, we’ll tackle conflict resolution, other times, we’ll go to therapy with a character. For this first episode, Miriam has graced us with a POV summary of the chapter starring none other than Vernon Dursley. Listen to us while we’re equally annoyed by how obnoxious he can be and also feel kind of sorry for him because he is genuinely afraid for his family and fears Harry. Considering his perspective is a great exercise for us because we’re used to seeing just one side of the story, and some things we notice definitely surprise us. Later in the episode, we also go to therapy with Harry as Bogdan and Miriam share what they would say to him following the events of this chapter. Some highlights of the episode are: a conversation on mental illness (particularly schizophrenia) and how it applies to the Harry Potter books, a discussion on how ignoring the thing you fear is an excellent coping mechanism, and our thoughts on house chores (good? bad? containment strategy for mental illness? keeping depression at bay?). What do you think? We’re excited to be back!

BONUS EPISODE: Reviewing London & the Harry Potter Studio Tour

BONUS CONTENT YAY! Andreea and Bogdan nerd TF out over the Harry Potter Studio Tour & London in general in this short(er) recording from back in December that didn't get to posted because we didn't think it's that interesting. But it makes a perfect bit new stuff while we prepare for season 2 of Melting Potter. Hear us put our geeky sorting hats on and talk for 30 minutes about all the Harry Potter costumes, sets, butterbeer, art displays, and, of course, the giant replica of Hogwarts which is a moment neither of us will ever forget. That's about it for my blabbing. Come on and listen, we have chocolate frogs! :)

S1E17 - The One where Dumbledore Starts Grooming Harry for Death

If you can't believe we've reached the end of the first season - neither can we! Join the hosts of Melting Potter - Miriam, Andreea, & Bogdan in the final episode of the first season. We're excitedly discussing topics such as Dumbledore grooming Harry for death while also kinda still caring for him? The complexities of that are just too much. We also talk about the house system, its injustices, Slytherin shaming, how nobody gets punished for anything, and how the Wizarding Word couldn't possibly survive without someone like Harry Potter coming along every now and then. All in all, a pretty eventful finale. Take a listen! :)

S1E16 - The One where the Trio Take a Career Aptitude Test

Getting oddly close to the end - eh? Action, action, and more action in this short(er) episode of Melting Potter. Hear us talk about Dumbledore's scheming (yet again), about the uselessness of the trio's actions, and about the sheer audacity of their transgressions. Furthermore, we debate ageism at Hogwarts - how nobody seems to take them seriously just because they're kids. We then proceed to rant for 10 minutes about all they left out in the movies, and we end on a high note with Andreea casually suggesting Quirrell was just being nice and waiting for everyone to pass their exams before going after the stone. All in all a very eventful episode of Melting Potter and a great lead up to the grand finale in two weeks! Yeet!

S1E15 - The One where We Just Can't with Pedagogy at Hogwarts

Ready to tackle chapter 15 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone? In this episode, we discuss how Hogwarts punishes children by putting them into even more danger, how Harry is very self-centred, how McGonagall is an extremely strict badass, and how we appreciate Harry’s effort not to get involved for once in his life. Irresponsible is a word we use a lot, especially when discussing Hagrid and Dumbledore, and their attitude toward letting Harry go into the Forbidden Forest at night. We’re also typical Harry Potter fanatics complaining about how disappointed we are of the things that were omitted in the movie, such as Harry riding Firenze and Neville being an important part of the journey into the forest. Andreea fiercely defends Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore (no surprises here) and comes off as a generally awful person in this episode (oh well, it’s probably just because she’s a Slytherin). Should Harry have been more considerate towards Ron when he refuses to hear Voldemo...

S1E14 - The One where Two Kids Smuggle a Dragon out of Scotland

In episode 14 of Melting Potter, we discuss chapter 14 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback. We really rip into Hagrid, criticising not only his recklessness and naivety, but also his unfitness for a teaching position, his reliance on some children to do his dirty work, and him being a liability when it comes to protecting the Stone. Why does Dumbledore keep unfit teachers like Trelawney and, later on, Hagrid around anyway? We also touch upon Malfoy’s scheming and how it may be used by JKR to build a foundation that ultimately shows that, while Draco has the capacity to do bad things, he is not evil enough to be a Death Eater. Is this the beginning of a lovely bond between Harry and Hermione? Does this chapter contain the first real cliffhanger of the books? More importantly, where does Hagrid get his rats from?
