The author David McRaney describes an "extinction burst" perfectly when he writes: “a predictable and common blast of defiance from the recesses of a brain denied familiar rewards.” When we are trying to change habits it's common to backslide a few days into the process and see our old habit come roaring back. This is an extinction burst, the bursting forth of an old habit that we are trying to eliminate. We can get past an extinction burst to create new and healthier habits.
