All too often clients go to digital agencies and say ‘right, I’m investing in you to do my social media. I expect minimum 50 orders per month from it’. Hmm, that may be tricky. Here’s why: Digital Marketing is never guaranteed. There is never an exact number of orders we can generate. Having a website is like having a shopfront. It gives you a presence, showcases your business and creates an open door for people who are interested in what you are offering to take look around. The challenge begins when you start to realise that simply having an online shopfront is not enough. You need to do at least some form of active digital promotion to let people know that your website exists and why they should visit. Simply having a website doesn't guarantee anybody will show up. What Is Digital Marketing, And What I Actually Do For A Living

I get it. Digital Marketing sounds a bit complicated. A sort of ‘up there and over my head’ idea. The word itself doesn’t really help to explain what it is either. Even my friends and family (as much as they wholeheartedly try) don’t fully understand what I do. If asked at a family do or the local shop, my nearest and dearest often refer to my business as ‘something on the web’ or ‘I don’t know, something to do with Google’. They give it a good go to explain what Zest does (and they do a pretty good job), but to be fair I don’t think the industry makes it very clear what we as digital marketers do, or why we do it. So, I thought I’d try and demystify it, for you, and for my family and friends, as the industry is clearly something that needs to be made clearer.
