Startupbootcamp was founded in 2010 in Copenhagen with the core idea of supporting the world’s best entrepreneurs as they grow their startups. Now as one of the world’s largest start up accelerators, they run 13 accelerator programs globally in 10 countries. Nearly 350 startups have since passed through its doors, with 71% of these going on to raise an average of $1 million. Thankyou was established in 2008 by co-founders Justine Flynn, Daniel Flynn and Jarryd Burns. The trio was just out of high school and wanted to make the world a better place for those living in poverty. Their first product was Thankyou Water, a product that 100% of the profits went to funding clean water projects around the world. It also featured an innovative Tracker-ID which allows you to follow the personal impact you’re making by purchasing their products. Against competition the likes of Coca-Cola Amatil, they created a social media movement to convince major Australian retailers such as 7-Eleven, Coles and Woolworths to sell their product. Thankyou Group today offers a range of food, hygiene and baby products and continues to donate 100% of profits to charitable projects around the world. Gelato Messina opened their first store in Darlinghurst in 2002 in a very different structure to what we know today. After facing some difficulties, Gelato Messina was relaunched in 2005 by Nick Palumbo, Danny Palumbo, Donato Toce and Declan Lee. Since 2005 they’ve grown from strength to strength, opening 16 stores across Australia and 1 store in Las Vegas. Young Henrys brewery was established in the back streets of Newtown in 2012 by two beer enthusiast Richard Adamson and Oscar McMahon. A few months later, through his passion for craft beer Dan Hampton met Richard and Oscar and it wasn’t long before he bought into the business and jumped on board fulltime. In four short years, Young Henrys have quickly become one of Sydney’s most talked about craft brewers. Brewing five core beers, Gin, Cider, five limited release brews and previously has had over 30 limited release brews. With world domination in their sights, they are now stocked nationally and have big plans to take their home grown brews global. We had the opportunity to chat with Dan about his early days, how they managed to build a strong presence in such a competitive industry and how collaborating on limited releases have helped them remain fresh. He started his first business in 1968 with just $610, was the first person to complete a solo helicopter flight around the world in 1982, named Australian of the year in 1986 and gives millions of dollars to charity every year. We had incredible opportunity to chat with Dick about why he started Dick Smith Electronics, how he grow the business to over 30 stores with an annual turnover of nearly $50 Million and sold it to Woolworths for tens of millions of dollars in just 14 short years, his adventures spirit and why it’s important to give back. Dick Smith generously shares the lessons he learnt from his mistakes and his advice to people starting out.
