Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be donein earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Luke 20:27-40 ESV  There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,  (28)  and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.  (29)  Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children.  (30)  And the second  (31)  and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died.  (32)  Afterward the woman also died.  (33)  In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”  (34)  And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,  (35)  but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,  (36)  for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.  (37)  But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.  (38)  Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.”  (39)  Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.”  (40)  For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

Religions is something that has always been hotly debated.In Jesus’ time there were two man groups of people, the Sadducees and the Pharisees.And these two groups of people would argue back and fourth about different theological things.After Jesus there was the Baptists and the Anabaptists.Then came the Catholics and the Protestants.Then the Reformed and the Evangelicals.Then the Liberals and the Conservative Christians.And now we are seeing a divide in the church between the full gospel Christians and the antinomian Christians.That is today, the main divide amongst American Christians today is if we believe in the whole of scripture (That is a full gospel belief) or if we should only believe in the new testament and we should throw out the Old testament… that is antinomianism.And as a side note, I would argue that Antinomianism is the most deadly enemy of the gospel to date… but I digress.But I digress, my point is simply this…People have a tendency of adding difficulty, and complexity to the Word of God.They look for ways to make it say what they want it to say and to mean what they want it to mean.And then when confronted by others who have done the very same thing, but have come to different conclusions, when they meet such people they argue and debate and fight and point fingers and call names.Then, in the midst of all the arguing there are some, lacking either spine or knowledge or both, who in an attempt to be “above those who argue” say things like “God is too great for us to comprehend, so we need not argue about such things…”.So you have these three groups of people… people who argue A, people who argue B, and a third group that argues that no one should be arguing.And all of this leads to a designation of the Gospel and the truth of God.Two those who argue A or B I quote to them:

2 Timothy 2:23-24 ESV  Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.  (24)  And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,
