How to Be Brave – Part 3 – “Into the Fire”

Worry is like smoke. The closer you get to the source, the thicker it gets. Worry simply indicates what our source of glory / meaning is in life. When we make the good things of earth our glory / meaning in life, since all these things are fragile, worry will be our constant companion. When we make God our glory / meaning in life, we finally can hold something that cannot be taken. This enables us to live without fear.

How to Be Brave – Part 2 – “Think Thank”

Anxiety isn’t just a huge problem today. It turns out that anxiety has always been a problem, and people have always had trouble processing it. But Paul was no stranger to fearful situations, which is why he knew exactly what to do about it. Today we’ll see the first kind of prayer that is the antidote to worry. Fear is overcome by giving thanks.

How to Be Brave – Part 1 – “Opposable Fear”

Fear is an emotion caused by belief in a looming potential loss. The source of our fears is usually something we’re going to lose or we’re afraid we won’t have in the future. Since we can never really know what’s the around the corner, is it even possible to live without fear? In this message we will see that fear is opposable. It is possible to drive this uninvited guest out of your life when it barges in. This series introduction will explore what causes our fears, and share the solution that we’ll be unpacking in the following two weeks.

Crazy Like Us – Part 4 – “Money Talks”

If your money could talk, what would it say about you? You probably don’t need to think too hard to answer the question. It might say that you worry. Or that you’re selfish. Or that you are rich toward God. Your money says something. Jesus invites us to be rich toward God. Not because God needs riches, but because he wants us to experience the peace that comes from being free people.

Crazy Like Us – Part 3 – “Means to an End”

If you the primary purpose of your money is yourself, you will have very little to show for yourself at the end of your life. In one mind-bending parable, Jesus transformed the way that we are to both view and use money. First, we need to see that the money we have to use isn’t even our money to use. We’re the manager, not the owner. Second, we have been positioned to use someone else’s money in order to gain personal benefits. We are not owners, we are mangers. And we have been given the brief opportunity to manage in a way that genuinely benefits us and others.

Crazy Like Us – Part 2 – “Living Sacrifice”

Isaac was Abraham’s only son whom he loved. God called him to sacrifice Isaac. But the point isn’t simply that we should obey God no matter what. The point is that there’s a debt of sin that every family owes to God. But God provides a substitute to pay that debt himself. This is what allows us to trust God when he asks us to sacrifice the things we love and trust in, for his glory.

Crazy Like Us - Part 1 – “The Blessed Test”

God presents Abraham, and you, with a stark choice: Hold on to what you have, and you’ll end up empty, or offer it without restriction to God, and you’ll be filled, both you and the world around you. He offers the same choice to you: If you want to live a tidy, safe life, without leaving your comfort zone, you aren’t going to be of much use to anybody. But if you open your hands on all of it to God, he’ll use it beyond your wildest expectations.

You Asked For It - Part 6 – “What Happens When I Die?”

When you ignore an uncomfortable reality, things usually get worse, not better. Yet, it is surprisingly easy for us to ignore the fact that we will face death. What happens two seconds after you die? Some people say you reincarnate. Others say that you hang out in purgatory for a while. And what about the bright light? What’s heaven like? Is hell real, and if so, why would a good God allow anyone to go there?

You Asked For It - Part 5 – “Are Spirits Real?”

There’s more the world than the material world. There is also the spiritual realm, and it is all around us. And while there are forces of spiritual good, there are also forces of spiritual evil. In this message, we’ll pull back the curtain on the spiritual world to see the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. But we’ll also discuss the origin and work of the Prince of Darkness to understand how he is at work in the world.

You Asked For It - Part 4 – “If God is Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen?”

If God is good, why does he allow bad things? This question is the beginning of the end of faith for many people, or it’s a question that never allows faith to begin at all. If you were God, perhaps bad things would only happen to bad people and good things would only happen to good people. So why do bad things happen?
