2 Samuel 19:8-43

Reconciling with the King

INTRO

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF RECONCILING WITH THE KING.

Acknowledge our _________ (2 Samuel 19:8-9).

See 18:7 (the people are defeated), 18:14-15 (Absalom is defeated), 19:8 (Israel had fled, each to his tent).

The first step toward reconciliation is to admit our sin and our unfaithfulness to Christ.

Remember our ________________ (2 Samuel 19:9).

Rev. 2:4-5

Speak _______ (2 Samuel 19:10).   “Why are you silent?”

                        Rom. 10:9

Matt. 10:32

Listen to the __________ (2 Samuel 19:11-15).    “Why wait?”

1) He appeals to their pride (2 Samuel 19:11).  “Why should you be last.”

2) He appeals to the proximity of their relationship (2 Samuel 19:12).   “You are my bone and my flesh”.

3) And he appeals to their peace of mind (2 Samuel 19:13).

REMEMBER THE KING’S WILLINGNESS TO FORGIVE.

SHIMEI, THE _____________ (2 Samuel 19:16-23).  “You will not die.”

1) Shimei humbled himself before David (2 Samuel 19:19-20).

2) Shimei was the first to meet David (2 Samuel 19:20).  This shows his earnestness to seek reconciliation.   He did not delay.

3) David forgave Shimei (2 Samuel 19:23).  Shimei cursed king, kicked dirt on him, threw rocks at him (ch. 16).  But David forgave Shimei.

Jn. 6:37   “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to me, I will certainly not cast out.”

MEPHIBOSHETH, THE __________ (2 Samuel 19:24-30).  “You shall divide the land”.

1) Mephibsheth’s weakness (2 Samuel 19:24-27).

2) David’s mercy.  But David did not reject Mephibosheth once he learned the truth.

Mic. 7:18 Who is a God like Thee, who pardons iniquity And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in unchanging love.

3) David’s justice (2 Samuel 19:29).   David returned only half of his previous estate to him.

BARZILLAI, THE _____________ (2 Samuel 19:31-39). “Come and live with me.”

1) The King desires their fellowship (2 Samuel 19:33, “you cross over with me”).

2) The King will provide for all their needs (2 Samuel 19:33, “I will sustain you in Jerusalem with me.”)

3) The King will kiss and bless his faithful servants (2 Samuel 19:39).

III.  NO PERFECT KINGDOM (2 Samuel 19:40-43).   “Nag, nag, picky, picky!”

CONCLUSION

Both sinners and wayward saints can be reconciled with the Son of David if they repent and come to Him.

See the mercy of the Son of David, see his willingness to receive all who come to him.   Come and be reconciled to the king.
