From Idea to Conception — Exploring the Design Process with Pietta Donovan

Whether it be the shape of a favorite pastry or the color of a foreign flower, interior designer Pietta Donovan derives inspiration from all things. A new collaboration with Walker Zanger presents her first tile collection, characterized by sun-drenched pastels and rounded shapes of the retro 70’s. This episode of “The Showroom” explores how Donovan’s tile line came to be and how a healthy work-life balance drives this interior designer’s creations. Growing up in New Zealand and Australia during the '70s and '80s directly influenced Donovan’s designs, she explained. With a deep nostalgia for place and time, the names, colors and shapes in her collection allude to Queensland flora and fauna and vivid childhood memories of bygone decades. After taking a career break to start a family, Donovan entered the industry anew with perspective and fresh inspiration. Her time away from the workplace allowed for creative freedom to explore her passion for tile and stone. The gift of time, perspective and reflection ultimately produced her vivid, personal collection of tile. Starting with an idea and a sketch, Donovan took her designs and developed them in auto-cad, playing with color and shape to create the multi-faceted line that mixes and matches so well. Though certain design trends are everlasting, like subway tile and white-washed kitchens, Donovan’s collection presents new colors and patterns the industry is lacking. Her whimsical designs and personal approach to her work is what sets Pietta Donovan and Walker Zanger apart from the masses.
