Ep222: Homegating

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Rick Alspaugh - Owner of The Original Alspaugh's Hardware & Boutique in Kingwood Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Never have I ever been happier to be wrong! Well, a couple of weeks ago I said something – on this show, as a matter of fact – I said something like, “We all know the Astros weren’t going nowhere in the playoffs,” and I couldn’t have been more wrong, could I? And as I said today on The Outdoor Cooking Show, “Never have I ever been happier to be wrong!” C’mon, admit it – you didn’t think they were going anywhere in the playoffs either, did you? Be honest!

Ep221: National Coffee Day

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Ron Brandani - Owner of Brandani's Restaurant & Wine Bar Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Life’s too short to drink cold coffee. Yeah, yeah – I know. I started the show last week with that same line, “Life’s too short to drink cold coffee,” but this week I actually have a method to my madness. Last week, I realized I’d let my coffee get cold right before we started The Outdoor Cooking Show, and I didn’t have time to run to the microwave and warm it up, but that stupid oversight actually inspired the entire subject matter for this week’s edition of the show. Why? Because this past week marked National Coffee Day.

Ep220: Post-Beta Takin’ Care of Business

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Dave Fremont - Spokesperson for Boyd's One Stop Greg Berlocher - Spokesperson for The Bellville Meat Market Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Life’s too short to drink cold coffee! I’m saying that out loud to remind myself to go warm up this cup of coffee in the microwave during the commercial break, because – life’s too short to drink cold coffee. I guess now I know why my parents used to drink their coffee so quickly when I was a kid. After all, they didn’t have microwaves back in the 50s, and when their coffee went cold – it stayed cold, so they drank it fast! And it’s ironic that this subject even came up in the first place, because I believe this next week is National Coffee Day.

Ep219: BBQ By The Book

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Daniel Vaughn - Full-time BBQ Editor for Texas Monthly Magazine Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" I’ve been doing a little more people watching this past week, and I wanted to start the show off by sharing some of my observations with you about people watching. I think you’ll find some of them humorous, and if not – at least I hope they’ll be entertaining, or informative.

Ep218: Cheesy Burgers & Crafty Beers

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Jay Peek - Executive Chef at Gordon Street Tavern Rick Kelsay - Executive Chef at City Acre Brewing Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" One of my favorite lines is, “Be careful what you ask for – you just might get it.” It actually applies very well to many things in life, but it was spot on about live sports these past few days. My wife and I were watching the Astros get destroyed for what seemed to be the 13th game in a row, and she said, “Well, we asked God to give us live sports back, but we didn’t say ‘winning live sports,’ so I guess we need to be a little more specific next time.”

Ep217: Big Boy Hurricanes & Baby Back Ribs

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Bear Dalton - Fine Wine Buyer at Spec's Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Here’s hoping this finds everybody in your household healthy, happy and safe. And you know – it seems like every conversation starts that way these days, doesn’t it? Actually, it’s a rather sad commentary on the state of our society in 2020, but we’re all more than just a little bit shell-shocked at this point, right?

Ep216: Post-Hurricane Blues

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Dave Fremont - Spokesperson for Boyd's One Stop Greg Berlocher - Spokesperson for The Bellville Meat Market Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Well! That escalated fast, didn’t it – hurricane season, I mean? Talk about your 1-2 tropical punch! Yeah, I’m sure somebody else has already used that line, but I just couldn’t resist. I’m sure the local fear-mongers have used up every cliché and bad play on words known to weather con artists – I mean forecasters. Sorry, I’m a little jaded when it comes to local TV meteorologists. I know they’re just doing their jobs. I had to do some of the same things when I was Irv Harrigan on The Hudson & Harrigan Show back in the day.

Ep215: Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Mike Castillo - Owner of Callisto Culinary Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" I want to start the show by asking a question: Did you watch the Democratic National…yeah, me neither! Not a single minute! And to be perfectly fair – and balanced – I won’t be watching the Republican Convention either, so it’s not a matter of partisanship. Well, now that I think about it a little more partisanship has everything to do with it, because as I’ve said before: Radical partisanship has destroyed all meaningful political discourse in this country, and to be honest – that’s pretty much disenfranchised me from all politics. I used to love politics, but there’s no middle ground anymore – it’s become, “You’re either all in or you’re all out. You’re either for us, or you’re against us.” No one’s allowed to deviate from the party line even a little bit, nowadays. If you do, your own party will call you a traitor, and the other party wi...

Ep214: I Told You So

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Meli Gomez - Owner of Meli V Catering Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" I hate to say “I told you so,” but – I told you so! The idea of football being played this fall took a major hit this past week, when two of the so-called Power-5 conferences postponed their fall sports until spring. So, that means football is hanging by a thread – or at least college football is hanging by a thread, anyway. And by the way – I really do hate to say, “I told you so,” because you know how much I love college football. Of course, we spend lots of time here on The Outdoor Cooking Show talking about lots of different topics, but football – heck, sports is one of my favorites. And justifiably so, because The Outdoor Cooking Show revolves around all kinds of food creations and preparation techniques – both outdoors and indoors, and food is a key ingredient in every sport imaginable – from hunting and fishing to baseball and football!

Ep213: Changes in Attitude – Changes in Healthy Food

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS: Nick Castleberg - Professional Chef and raconteur extraordinaire Fred Olson -Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show" Can you hear me now? Of course, I’m being facetious, but now that I stop and think about it – I guess we could be having some studio – transmitter link interruptions, so you might not be able to hear me now. But the real reason I asked, “Can you hear me now?” was because we all seem to be struggling with connectivity problems these days, don’t we? Heck, we’re just struggling in general these days. Let’s face it, 2020 is not going to go down in the history books as a great year to remember. In fact, it might be a great year to forget.
