#23: Spiel Des Jahres Review-stravaganza!

The Spiel des Jahres is one of tabletop gaming’s most prestigious awards, and the nominees have just been announced! In this episode, we take a look at two different SdJ-nominated games: The Mind (nominated for Spiel Des Jahres) and Ganz Schön Clever (nominated for the Kennerspiel or heavy-weight game award). We also make our way through a massive recent plays segment, and Tim laments the general lack of the mail song on recent episodes. We’re also joined, again, by Stephen Hange for his thoughts and impressions on both The Mind and Ganz Schön Clever! Show notes below: (more…)

#19: On playing great games; Twixt Review

The world is upside down as we start another episode with our recent plays. Before things get too heated, we also review Twixt, a classic abstract that will appeal to particularly few people, but still offers a great game experience. Finally, we dive into a messy discussion topic that gets a little heated: are great games infinitely replayable? Should we look for games that offer a lot of replayability? Should we expect our favorite games to always stay fresh? As you might expect, Tim and I reach different conclusions! Show notes after the break. (more…)
