The Mindfulness Effect – How it can TRANSFORM your game and your LIFE #126

With Vin Harris and Deana Rushworth I just had to put this podcast together after completing the Mind Factor Mindfulness Practitioner Certification that Vin Harris and myself led for a group of golfers both amateurs and professional players and coaches. We have all heard of the benefits of Mindfulness. The science behind it is REALLY strong. The effects are apparent in ALL areas of life. It really does help when your life is a struggle with perhaps anxiety or depression. But perhaps most notably Mindfulness has not been explored enough in terms of helping us get BETTER at what we do. Be that sport, business or life in general. We have talked so much about ATTENTION on the Brain Booster yet what do we actually DO to train our attention? This is where Mindfulness is PROFOUND The ability to have a daily PRACTICE A practice that has LONG term benefits We ran the training over 4 consecutive weeks with a 2 hour theory session on a Thursday and then a practice session on a Monday. The effects of the group dynamic was simply stunning. The accountability of being in a group made all of the difference to each and every participant. As Vin Harris often says: ‘there is a BIG difference between a conceptual understanding of Mindfulness and an actual PERSONAL experience. One of the participants on the course Deana Rushworth shares with us HER personal experience. Deana is a very successful PGA coach from Oxford She makes the point in the podcast that she had read and heard that virtually EVERY successful person she has come across has a Mindfulness practice yet she always felt that she ‘didn’t have time’ for Mindfulness. We get to talk about the profound potential benefits of exploring a daily practice. Developing the ability to not so much change your thoughts but have a different RELATIONSHIP to your thoughts. You will gain so much from the insights in this podcast to perhaps begin your own explorations. Luke Sutton – Back from the Edge – A story of regaining mental health #124

Luke Sutton played professional cricket for over 15 years at the highest level for both Derbyshire and Lancashire. In that time he waged a battle against alcoholism, depression and anxiety. On the face of it as he performed well season after season all was well but as he details in his brilliant new book ‘Back from the Edge’ he was fighting a losing battle. As we discuss in today’s show were in not for a chance meeting at Euston station with his former County captain Glen Chapple his life may well have spiralled totally out of control. Luke was sat in the station drinking and was so overcome with anxiety he couldn’t board the train. The chance meeting with Chapple resulted in him beginning the process of getting himself back on track. He spent time in the Priory where we discuss the incredible work done by the therapists there. In our time together we discuss The pressure of professional sport and how the relentless drive for success can really affect certain individuals How it ...

Tony Bennett – Working with Disabled Golfers – A truly inspiring story for our times #123

It is wonderful today to welcome to the Brain Booster Tony Bennett. Tony has spent his life steeped in the game of golf and most recently as the President of EDGA The European Disabled Golf Association It is a wonderfully inspiring story of the development of the association. The fundamental of the association is ‘Golfer First’ In the sense that the disabled golfers are first and foremost viewed as golfers. Yet they may have a disability but fundamentally they are involved in playing the game of golf Many lives have been transformed as a result of the work of the EDGA How lives can be changed in an instant as a result of a tragic accident or a doctor’s diagnosis yet golf CAN become a sanctuary of hope and development. Tony articulated this wonderfully well and the tremendous rewards that can be gained from being involved with EDGA as a coach. We also dive into performance The distinct difference between coaching and ‘teaching’ Tony’s father is Howard Bennett who played an incr...

Wendy Wood – Good Habits – Bad Habits and why they are SO important – Especially NOW! #122

It is good to be back with you again on the Brain Booster and today we have a VERY special guest with us. In the current situation facing us all of our daily lives have just been hit by a barrage of changes. Things we have taken for granted forever have been compromised and challenged. Our daily routines have been obliterated. Yet potentially this situation gives us a once in a lifetime opportunity to do some things that once we get out the other side COULD change our lives forever. We have the chance to really ask ourselves what are our GOOD HABITS and what are our BAD HABITS? Then more importantly to reflect on what we WANT our lives to look like when we emerge into whatever ‘normal’ becomes in the months ahead. We have a unique opportunity to REFLECT. Then to decide WHAT to change. This is why our guest today is so important one of the world’s LEADING experts on habit formation and control. Wendy Wood is a research psychologist who has devoted the last 30 years to understandin...

Matt Masters – Find another TWENTY yards in Lockdown #121

How SuperSpeed golf can improve your distance in your own back garden Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Matt Masters from SuperSpeed golf. Matt is a PGA Professional and Certified Mind Factor coach. Whilst most of us are in this lockdown period and really wanting to be back out on the course I wanted to bring Matt on to the show to explain what you CAN still do in your own home to gain extra distance once you get back on to the fairways. The key principle of the Mind Factor still applies in the sense of finding ways to get the best out of the 24 hours in front of you even in the most challenging of situations. How CAN I still improve my game? This at the moment is a far better question than ‘When are we going to play again?’ The first question you have 100% control over the second you have ZERO control. SuperSpeed golf training has been taking the golf world by storm over the past few years with so many top players using the product and gaining incredible results. It is ...

Randy Joyner – Coaching on the GOLF course – Why it matters so much #120

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by highly successful PGA Tour coach Randy Joyner. He is someone who has been right at the ‘coal face’ of the game both as a player and now a coach. Randy got in touch with me after reading both the ‘Lost Art of Putting’ and the ‘Lost Art of Playing Golf’ and as we discuss many of the ideas in the books resonated with his own philosophy on the game. We look at how he has totally regained his passion and love for golf. His genuine enthusiasm for the game is infectious. We had a wonderful conversation about coaching and in particular why more coaching should actually be done out on the golf course itself. How a player actually reveals his TRUE game on the course in a way that is never revealed on the range. As he describes Randy has developed something of a hatred of too much time on the range. We talk through some of his own experiences coaching PGA Tour players and in particular a great story of how he dealt with a top player hitting poo...

Gabriele Oettingen – Rethinking ‘Positive Thinking’ a formula for the current crisis? #119

On today’s Brain Booster it is my great pleasure to introduce as my guest Gabriele Oettingen. In this current situation this may well be one of THE most important podcasts I have ever done. Gabriele’s work is truly groundbreaking and incredibly thought provoking. It is counter intuitive to ‘conventional wisdom’. So often in golf or life we are inundated with advice to “think positively.” Just ‘Think positively, believe in yourself’!!! The general message is the same: look on the bright side, be optimistic in the face of adversity, and focus on your dreams. And whether we’re trying to motivate ourselves to win a golf tournament or run a marathon, we’re told time and time again that focusing on fulfilling our wishes will make them come true. Gabriele Oettingen draws on more than twenty years of research in the science of human motivation to reveal why the conventional wisdom falls short. The obstacles that we think prevent us from realizing our deepest wishes can actually le...

Nick O ‘Hern – How I beat Tiger Woods TWICE in matchplay!! #118

On the Brain Booster today we have a wonderful guest in the shape of Nick O’Hern. Nick played successfully on both the European and PGA Tours. And during that time amongst many great achievements he beat Tiger Woods TWICE in matchplay, when Woods was at the peak of his powers and totally dominant in the game of golf. One of the times Nick beat Tiger he had just come of SEVEN straight tournament victories. The way he describes his mindset to achieve this is absolute gold dust. From an early age Nick was heavily involved in many sports but eventually focused totally on the game. By his own admission he didn’t have a great amateur career by modern standards. When he became a trainee professional he had a handicap of 4. Everything changed when he finally came to write out a CLEAR PLAN. He gave himself a time deadline. He looked very closely at all aspects of the game swing, fitness, diet and as he says most importantly the mental game. He put in place a very clear structure to work on...

Nick Bradley – Controlling the NOISE – how to limit the input of information for the good of your game. #117

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by top performance coach Nick Bradley. Nick will be familiar to many of you with his work as a Sky Sports analyst. He has coached winners on every major tour. Most notably his work with Justin Rose. During their time together Justin went from 125th in the world to 5th. Nick has written two best selling books called the ‘7 Laws of the Golf Swing’ and ‘Kinetic Golf’. He has also been a keynote presenter to many top companies across the USA We spent a great time together discussing all things golf and inevitably all things corona virus related. Our discussion went into some interesting and unexpected directions. We got into some fascinating areas looking at the philosophy of the game and how the current crisis may allow us to come out at the other side with a much more enduring and stable perspective. How to control ‘the stimulus’. There is now so much noise around us. So much contrasting and conflicting information. How a ‘game manager’...
