Islamic Faith in Focus 16: The Basic Responsibilities of a Muslim

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan address the basic rights and responsibilities of Muslims and Islam. He opens this episode by asking – what does a commitment to Islam mean? Is it simply making your prayers? Is it sticking to the dietary restrictions that are set forth in the Quran and Hadith? Or is there more to being a Muslim and submitting to Allah? The Imam explains that in the time of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) he was offered riches and power if he would simply stop preaching about Islam. The Prophet said that no matter what he was offered he would keep spreading the word so that everyone would know what is right. Imam Hassan goes on to draw parallels between the Prophet’s companions and today’s leaders. The companions would go out into the town, with no cameras, no TMZ, no coverage, their sole purpose of finding someone to help and give aid to. Their only ulterior motive was to please Allah. The Imam shares other parallels between the Prophet’s companions and how they would act with each other, and those around them. While listening to these hadiths, one can only ask themselves if they are living with the intention of pleasing Allah. Islamic Faith in Focus 15: Learning to Be More Humble

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan he talks about what it means to be humble. In the world today, we have leaders that are not very humble, in fact some of our world leaders are prideful. It is for that reason that this lesson in being humble is not specifically for Muslims; this applies to non-Muslims as well. The Imam quotes 11:23 from the Quran which reads “Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.” He also quotes 22:54 “And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.” Siting these verses the Imam points out that the Quran itself encourages us to be humble in the sight of our Lord. Imam Hassan goes on to point out that the Quran reminds us to humble ourselves, not only to the God, but to our parents as well. Islamic Faith in Focus 14: Disobeying The Command of God

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan he addresses the punishments for disobeying the commands of God. As Imam Hassan opens this podcast he quotes the Quran from the book of An-Nisa (4:131) “And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allah . But if you disbelieve - then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy.” He goes on to say that in Al-Jinn (72:23) the punishment for not obeying God’s word is laid out “But [I have for you] only notification from Allah, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.” To explain what he means by this, Imam Hassan goes a little deeper as he talks about the messengers of God – as an example, Noah, those that didn’t listen to God were punished by a great flood. Except Noah, God spared his life and that of his family, as they had followed God’s words. Islamic Faith in Focus 10: Helping the Needy

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan he addresses helping those in need in Islam. The Imam opens the podcast by citing the 177th verse from Al Baqarah in the Quran, which says: “Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.” He then recounts a story of a day where he was handing out food those in need in and around Baltimore. And a man came to him and asked if the meat that was being handed out was free. Imam Hassan told him that it was, he just had to stand in line. While this man stood in line he couldn’t stop talking about how excited he was to get this meat, because he had no idea how he was going to afford the meat for his family without this. The point was, you never know who is in need of what. Don’t forget that we are introducing the new Venn Network t-shirt, which you can own by heading over to Amazon.com. Islamic Faith in Focus 9: Islam and The Hell Fire

Islamic Faith in Focus 8: Islamic Etiquette

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan, he addresses Islamic etiquette –as in how a Muslim should speak and interact with other people. Using the example of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) the Imam explains that The Prophet didn’t use a lot of extra words, he didn’t talk just to hear his own voice, he spoke when he had something to say, and when he did he got right to the point. Pretty much saying that sometimes less is more when it comes to addressing people. Muslims are not supposed to back-bite, curse, or be derogatory to one another or in speech. If they are, that is not from Islam – rather it is from that person’s character. The Imam reminds us that our words will be used to judge us on the final day, and that kind and sweet words will help us – and the nonsense we speak, the hurtful words we utter, the garbage that fall out of our mouths will be help against us. So, remember to always speak kind words. In short, before you open your mouth think about what you are going to say…and as your mother used to say, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it anything at all. Islamic Faith in Focus 8: Islamic Etiquette

Islamic Faith in Focus 7: Islam and Charity

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan he talks about Islam and Charity, or sadaqah as Muslims call it. Sadaqah, or giving of alms, is one of the five pillars of Islam. But, there are different kind of charity in Islam. The hadith of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) says that “Every act of goodness is charity” (Sahih Muslim), of course there is giving to the poor “To give something to a poor man brings one reward, while giving the same to a needy relation brings two: one for charity and the other for respecting the family ties.” (Al-Tirmidhi), but even something as simple as a smile is can be charity “Your smile for your brother is a charity. Your removal of stones, thorns or bones from the paths of people is a charity. Your guidance of a person who is lost is a charity.” (Bukhari). To stress the importance of charity the Prophet stated that “The believer’s shade on theDay of Resurrection will be his charity” (Al-Tirmidhi). Some charity even outlives the life of the man or woman. If they donate to a school, or give books, and so on…that sadaqah will continue to bless the man that gave it. Islamic Faith in Focus 6: Be of Good Character

On this week’s Islamic Faith in Focus podcast with Imam Hassan he addresses being Muslim and being of good character. There is a large misconception that seems to surround Muslims and Islam. People have this idea that Muslims only want to do harm to others and to cause pain to those that don’t follow Islam. The truth is, that nothing could be further from the truth! Imam Hassan gives references about the Prophet Mohammed’s (pbuh) character from the hadith. He goes on to talk about how on September 11th 2001 there was this narration in the news that Islam was attacking the United Sates, which simply isn’t true. The fact is that is was a handful of mentally ill people who perpetrated this evil act. After these horrible acts people started to do research on Islam, what is Islam? What do Muslims honestly believe? And once they started to read and do their own research they learned that Islam was a beautiful religion of peace, and not what was being shown on the nightly news. In fact, many people actually started to convert to Islam as a result of their studies. Imam Hassan reminds us of the hadith reported by Malik, Mawatta; Ahmed, Musnad and Mishkat al-Masabih where the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said “God has sent me as an apostle so that I may demonstrate perfection of character, refinement of manners and superiority in behavior." Islamic Faith in Focus 6: Be of Good Character

Islamic Faith in Focus 4: Treatment of Women in Islam

Following last week’s episode where Imam Hassan explained how hatred and racism have no place in Islam, he addresses the issue of the treatment of women in the Islamic faith. Imam Hassan starts this episode off by reading Quran chapter 4 – The Women - verse 19, which says “O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” We should treat the women in our lives; be they our mothers, our daughter, our wives, or sisters, in a manner that we would want them to treat us. We have to remember our daughter watch how we treat their mothers, and they grow up expecting to be treated the same way in their marriages. To drive this point home, Imam Hassan relays a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah where he says that the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said “Among the Muslims the most perfect, as regards his faith, is the one whose character is excellent, and the best among you are those who treat their wives well.” We are asked to remember that Adam (May Allah be Pleased with Him) was so lonely that he begged and begged Allah for a companion, thus Allah gave him Eve as a companion. Our wives are our aids, not our maids. So tune in to this episode of the podcast to get the truth on how Muslims are supposed to act towards women, after all The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) did say "Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother" [Ahmad, Nasai]. Islamic Faith in Focus 4: Treatment of Women in Islam

Islamic Faith in Focus 3: Hate and Racism in Islam

On this episode of Islamic Faith in Focus with Imam Hassan, following on last week's episode, he addresses hate and racism from the Islamic perspective. Imam Hassan says that hate and racism has no place in Islam or in a Muslims heart. He emphasizes his point by quoting the Quran chapter 49, verse 13, that says "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." He goes on to recall an assignment that he would give to his students in his sociology class where they had to interview another student from a different ethnic background. He noticed that with his students this assignment would breakdown various walls and expectations, he goes on to say that one student who did this assignment is still good friends with another student to this very day. The Imam goes on to quote another verse from the Quran pointing out that we, as Muslims, are taught that it is wrong to dislike someone based on the color of their skin - we need to treat every human equally, regardless of their race, sexually orientation, gender, background, or faith. Imam Hassan also cites the last sermon of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) where he stated "Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone. All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety (taqwa) and good action." Islamic Faith in Focus 8: Islamic Etiquette

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety (taqwa) and good action."
