About Us

My name is Zdenek and I am a qualified English teacher from the Czech Republic. Back in 2013 I started this podcast to help myself achieve C2 level in speaking. Over the years, it has grown in popularity and now has its appreciative audience. On the podcast I often interview interesting people that I meet (often English native speakers), and talk about subjects that relate to my life. Sometimes I teach language, too. So buckle up and come along for the ride.

Episode 284 - Spanish Stereotypes

This episode was recorded during one of my English classes, namely the intermediate class. This was the first time I'd had a Spanish guest on the podcast and we decided to talk about English stereotypes. We dealt with timekeeping, food, drinks and others trying to offer a balanced view of positive and negative ones.

Episode 283 - Nurcan Baysal

This episode is dedicated toNurcan Baysal who is a Kurdish journalist and a human rights activist from Turkey. Few months ago I taught her in an advanced class here in London. A week later I went to a panel discussion with her in Free Word in Farringdon. I had been invited to this event by my colleague Billie, an English teacher, who also features in this episode. Essentially, the episode is a series of monologues and dialogues with Billie and also my cousin Honza who as we know knows a lot about history. We try to offer our view on censorship in Turkey, explain who the Kurds are, and try to break down what has been going on in Turkey. I hope we managed to do justice to Nurcan's unrelenting effort and work. I don't normally do heavier topics like this on my podcast, but I think if approached in the right way, they can have a powerful effect on the audience and I am convinced this was the right thing to do.

Episode 279 - UK's General Elections 2019

As someone who is not a fan of Brexit and Boris Johnson, I was gutted when the general elections results were published this Thursday. I called Nick on Discord, a political science student from the UK, to help us understand what had happened.

Episode 278 - Michelle's Research

In this episode, I speak to my academic manager from my summer job in Wembley Michelle. Michelle is from Ireland, but she has also worked in UAE for 5 years. She has a very nice accent and is well educated. Currently she is doing a PHD in linguistics, but she already has a couple of degrees under her belt. Her research is focusing on cultural difficulties that teachers that teach in places like UAE face. Apart from talking about her studies, we also touch on linguistics in general and why we both like it so much. Michelle also reveals her secret to being so organised and positive. And of course, we talk about what it has been like working together, and the challenges and rewards involved in our summer camp job.

In this episode, I have a friendly chat with Aisling who was my colleague at a summer camp in Wembley. Before I recorded this, I did little research and dug out 11 stereotypes on Irish people. The idea is that I ask Aisling how he feels about them and whether she thinks they are true.
