About Us

Music discovery used to come from radio, MTV, shared tape mixes, Rolling Stone magazine, record stores, and other places no longer serving that purpose. Your hosts Matthew and Kyle will try to introduce you to great music, new and old each week in the Audio Judo podcast. You will get homework to listen to albums and tracks- and hear from some of the artists themselves. Proud part of Pantheon - the podcast network for music lovers.

Interview With Aubrey Powell

EOn this music-adjacent episode of Audio Judo, Matthew and Kyle interview legendary British graphic designer and filmmaker Aubrey Powell. If you listen to music, you've probably seen some of his work. Along with Storm Thorgerson he was the co-founder of the design firm Hipgnosis which was responsible for some of the most iconic album covers of the 70's and 80's for bands including: Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Yes, Genesis, 10cc, Peter Gabriel, Bad Company, Scorpions, Styx, Black Sabbath, and many more. Perhaps most famously they designed several albums for Pink Floyd including the prismatic rainbow cover for Dark Side Of The Moon. After that, he transitioned into producing/directing films and music videos, many of which are now classics in their own right. His art and design work is frequently on display at museums and art exhibitions throughout the world. Your homework for this episode is to go check out Aubrey Powell's work, and then drop us a line letting us know which album cover is your favorite. As a bonus, if you have a great story involving one of the albums designed by Hipgnosis (see the complete list here), send it along and we might read it on the podcast.
