Take the case pianist Peter Kater, who took home this years gramophone statue in the New Age category for the second time in his 4 decade career. He's a leading figure in the new age field now, cutting over 60 albums since 1983, including acclaimed recordings with native flutist R. Carlos Nakai. But it didn’t start out well. Peter Kater: I grew up in New Jersey and I had not a great childhood. My mother was kind of a drama queen. She married a guy who was abusive, an alcoholic and it was not fun. She died of cancer right when I turned 18. She was sick for about two years, and when she passed it was literally on the night of my birthday. I was sorry for her death because I did love her, but I was so aware that I was set free of her drama and ...

Echoes Podcast: David Helpling Interview

In the Echoes Podcast, guitarist David Helpling takes us into the runic and oceanic influences of his January CD of the Month, Rune. Helpling is a southern California musician who has been a favorite on the show for about 25 years. He’s recorded all his albums on the Spotted Peccary label, noted for their deep ambient music. His three recordings with Jon Jenkins were all CD of the Month picks. But for his latest solo album, he’s gone truly solo, creating an album with a guitar, a bass and a lot of processing. Rune was the Echoes CD of the Month in January. It’s a concept album, a tone poem based around the Nordic Rune for ocean. He talks about ambient guitar, the ocean and ancient runes. It’s a space music opus influenced by Pink Floyd and early electronic music. All India Radio's Martin Kennedy use's samples from a bad 1962 Sci-Fi Film, The Creation of Humanoids, to tie together a retro-futuristic album. Martin Kennedy: My mission is to bring space rock to the chill out crowd with a little bit of old school hip hop thrown in, too. I don’t know, I honestly don’t know what I would call my music. But I do like space rock. Eternal was the Echoes CD of the Month for December 2019 and his previous album, Space earned the same honor in 2018. Neuland is the name of a project featuring two former members of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann and Paul Haslinger. Baumann was a member of the classic edition of the dream, appearing on albums like Phaedra, Rubycon, Ricochet and Stratosfear.He went on to found the Private Music label. Haslinger was a member in the 1980s, during their Private Music years and most prolific soundtrack years. He went on to release some wonderful solo albums, record with Lightwave and has scored several movies and TV shows, including editions of the Underworld and Resident Evil series, and the TV shows Halt and Catch Fire and Fear the Walking Dead.
