Black Holes, Margaret Hamilton and Women in STEM

Imagine going to the moon without a map, or trying to land with a computer too overloaded with tasks to know which functions to prioritize. That’s what two of the most famed Apollo missions faced — and would have failed to figure out — without the work of women. For the Apollo missions, it was Margaret Hamilton — and for last week’s black hole photo, it was Dr. Katie Bouman. On this episode of 14 Speaks, Dylan Van Sickle and Jenni Holtz activate their thrusters to travel at light speed through their accomplishments to understand the efforts of, and outlook for, women in STEM. A Walk Through Wintrust

While there might be whispers of Wintrust, 14 East and Radio DePaul Sports set out to get the full experience for ourselves — that included student bus rides, high-priced concession stands and a feverish student section. What we found was few but loyal fans, lots of worthwhile promotions for both men’s and women’s games and a DePaul Men’s Basketball team that might actually have a postseason shot. Listen above to walk with us through Wintrust.

The Business Behind Astrology

Astrology may have been around for thousands of years, but there has been a recent resurgence on social media. With self-proclaimed astrologers taking over Twitter, the meaning of astrology has been growing muddier. We decided to take a look at the real science behind the practice, talking to students about their interpretation of their signs as well as professional astrologers who are dedicated to mapping the stars and relating it to those of us on earth. 14 Speaks is produced by Carina Smith and Dylan Van Sickle.
