Embracing Identity

Three facts you’ll learn about Whitney in this episode are that she’s a Grrrl Live OG! Making connections energizes her, and her default setting is optimism. With a background in non-profits, her career started in San Francisco, an LGBTQ friendly state, she now lives in Minnesota and is still heavily involved in the LGBTQ community. Growing up, she was a tomboy, and she leans more towards a “masculine” style - the distinction in her case is that she never felt like a man; it was the clothes that society says are appropriate that made her feel boxed-in. This episode includes topics like: what it feels like to feel unsafe in public; the privilege of masculinity and a few tips on how to look stronger as women in potentially intimidating situations. Mindset and Powerlifting

Keli Hay is an aspiring powerlifter, and she’s also a personal fitness trainer. In 2016 Keli was over 200lbs and was unhappy with her health. Always someone motivated by numbers and data, she tracked her weight loss and food intake with the help of a personal trainer. Seeing the numbers drop was almost a by-product of setting a weight-loss goal. The most significant shift was her mindset - she decided to carve the time out to focus on herself, finding different ways to be creative in her movement. These lifestyle changes led to better health, a new career path and a decision to choose health each day. Recovering from PTSD

Recovery isn’t a linear process. Leslie Mulcahy is Canadian, an unashamed fan of Celine Dion and she’s recovering from PTSD. What do you do when someone in a position of authority “asks” you to put yourself in harm’s way for a good cause. A split second decision and the unfortunate consequences led to Leslie living with trauma. For years her body was in state of trauma and this became her new “normal”. Often when we hear about PTSD we picture the armed forces or first responders, not our friends and neighbors, and certainly not ourselves – no-one was more surprised at the diagnosis than Leslie. Therapy, medication and education are the tools that have led Leslie to recovery.
