What I found in the minds of serial killers
In the 1970s John E. Douglas was a relatively young FBI agent who would travel around the US teaching police officers the bureau's tactics. John knew he was inexperienced compared to the seasoned detectives he was instructing. But he had an idea to accelerate his learning: go into prisons and speak to notorious serial killers. They weren't called 'serial killers' back then. John helped come up with the term. Through the interviews John was able to understand how the minds of these criminals worked and how it could be applied to solve open cases. But the gruelling work took its toll on John. Andrea Kennedy spoke to him about how it began to erode his mental health and very nearly cost him his life. Image: murderer Edmund Kemper (left) with former FBI agent John E. Solving international crime from our sofas
Eliot Higgins has been described as "a real life, modern-day Sherlock Holmes". Outlook's Neal Razzell finds out how Eliot went from being an unemployed admin worker to a world-class digital sleuth. He set up Bellingcat, an investigative website that seeks to solve international crimes and was joined by stay-at-home dad Timmi Allen. Their painstaking digital work has unmasked the Salisbury poisoning suspects, cracked the MH17 air crash case and they are now working with the International Criminal Court. #49 The Chameleon Killer
St. Lucie County Florida is a community located about 90 miles north of Miami and it is just what you would expect in sunny Florida-hot and humid. The area is a heavy on the wildlife with lots of swampy canals running throughout which empty into the famed Florida Everglades. For a killer, there is no better place to dump a body because if the weather doesn’t help decay the body fast, the critters will get it and within a short amount of time, there will be no evidence that a crime was ever committed. Or, at least, that is what a killer was hoping for but one July evening, fate was not on this killer’s side. A body was left behind and it would lead to years of trying to catch the infamous killer with lots of names. Nothing quite says fear like a machete. In this episode we bring you to distinct stories of some of the most barbaric and utterly inexplicable attacks with a blade to poor souls who did nothing to deserve such brutality. The first story comes from Apex, North Carolina, where an 18-year-old girl named Priyanka Kumari is savagely attacked on her way home from school. The second comes from South Florida of course, where 17-year-old Jose Amaya-Guardado is ganged up on and killed by his classmates at a live-in trade school for troubled youth. They then have sex near Jose's corpse because nothing quite says romance like hacking up a kid to pieces.

The human mind can go to such depths of depravity that, for the average well-adjusted person, it’s hard to even imagine. Kevin Ray Underwood’s mind was so far gone that his sexual fantasies started to include cannibalism. When 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin went missing, both of her parents lives were utterly destroyed. Little did they know that Jamie was literally just a few doors away in the same apartment building, and they were likely sitting there the moment she was killed.
Some tales of human depravity are just unimaginable. Are they the actions of a monster, or simply a monstrous act?Sometimes the lines are not quite so clear, and perhaps monsters are not only real, but existing all around us, and hidden in plain site. This is the story of a young boy namedJoshua Earl PatrickPhillips, an even younger girl namedMaddie Clifton, and a waterbed.
31-year-old Nicole VanderHeyden was substitute teacher and mother of three. She lived with her boyfriend and father of her infant son, Doug Detrie, in Bellevue, Brown County, WI. The Green Bay metro area. Her body was found naked and strangled in a farm field on May 21, 2016. Her skull was fractured and she suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of her head breaking and dislocating her jaw as well as injuries to her esophagus, trachea, and neck consistent with strangulation. Her clothes were found off the side of a highway on-ramp. Doug reports her missing that same morning. Police arrest him a couple days later after Nicole’s blood is found on the pavement and the murder weapon, a “black cord,” outside his home.
In 1997, Shannon McCrossan moved with her two daughters, 8-year-old Kirsten Hatfield and 3-year-old Faith to a home on Jet Drive in Midwest City, OK. At the time, life seemed to be okay. The neighbors were friendly and there were children for the girls to play with. On May 13th, 1997, Shannon awoke to any mother’s worst nightmare. Kirsten was missing from her bedroom. Searches were made for the 8-year-old girl, but she was never found. The trail ran cold, until 2015 when the case was reopened and re-examined, leading investigators to a suspect in the unlikeliest of places…
In the early morning hours of February 5th, 2015, a man wearing a mask and black tactical gear burst into the bedroom of Lisa Trubnikova. Eventually, he took the mask off to reveal a familiar face. He wanted the women to know who he was and why he was there. For years, Lisa had not thought about this man. But he had been doing a lot of thinking about her… Special Guest: Chris D'Elia (http://chrisdelia.com)
The Peripheral EP1: Smoking Crack With Nazis
Sometimes the road is less traveled for good reason. In the premiere episode I share how I learn a painful lesson after my older brother takes me on a dangerous journey, and a listener relates a horrifying, unexpected discovery.
The Peripheral EP26: Stabbed in the Back
You ever wonder what the prequel to the Peripheral was? Aaron and I have shared many of our own personal stories on the podcast but I wanted to hear listener stories. This was my first interview I did almost a year ago after asking listeners for tragic stories in their lives. Being an IT guy myself, I'm always drawn to cyber crime or scandals and this story was so unbelievable to me that I had to share it.Mhyarwrote to me and told me about an incident that happened to him while chatting with a woman online. https://theeyeopener.com/2014/09/he-was-literally-stabbed-in-the-back/
