CO-0108: The Legend Of Goody Cole
Most Americans can recall back to school being in classes that talked about the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused, 19 of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging. This event was made historically cemented into our culture by the sheer size of those involved and by the popularity of playwright Arthur Millers 1953 award-winning play “The Crucible” Arthur Miller’s play was a metaphor for the “Witch Hunt” for communists during the Red Scare however it made the events of the 1600s in the American Colonies common knowledge. We are not going to spend today’s episode investigating the Red Scare, or even diving into the modern equivalent of the Witch Trials by comparing the 1600’s witch Hunts to the Satanic Panic of the ’70s and ’80s We are going to tell the story of a single outlier of the Salem Wit...

123 Salem: Witch City Today
Eric Dwinnells, The Witchfinder General of Salem Massachusetts, has many thoughts about the city in which he carries out his work. So does guest cohost Brian Toney. Tonight they sit down without notes to discuss their true thoughts, feelings and theories about Witch City: Salem, MA. If you know anything about Salem, it's probably because of the witchcraft trials that took place there in 1692. Ultimately, at least 20 people were executed as a direct result of the witch trials and in the over 300 years that have followed, the city has grabbled with how to deal with this national tragedy. How can you both acknowledge the terror of the tragedy and yet still market it to millions of tourist? Salem is widely considered the Halloween capital of the world and with good reason: every day in Salem is Halloween. But in October, the city ramps up to a whole new level.Tonight Eric and Brian will talk about what makes Salem so special...and some ways in which (witch?) it could be better! spookyas...

The Salem Witch Trials: Still Insane, After All These Years!
WHAT was going on in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692?? A pretty fair question! In the span of just a few months, a small colonist community went a little nuts and condemned and executed 20 people, mostly women, for witchcraft. At a time in Western history when witch hunts and trials had been winding down, they made a sudden big, if brief, comeback in New England. This week we give you the who, what, where, and when, as well as some pretty interesting theories on why, exactly, the whole mess happened. Frustrated teens? Mental illness?Could funky rye have played a part?? Historians are still divided!
