Genesis 35

Jacob returns to Bethel after the horrible events of chapter 34. He finds that God is faithful to His word and the promises are reaffirmed. However, we also see that though Jacob is back in God's will, the effects of the curse are still active and the seed of the woman who will deliver has not yet come.

Genesis 33 - Jacob / Israel - Simul Justus Et Peccator

Jacob has been changed by God and God answers Jacob's prayer to be protected from Esau. Jacob demonstrates a true repentance for what he has done to Esau. But Jacob also still shows us that his sinful nature is not yet abolished. Jacob lies to Esau and settles in Shechem rather than returning to his father - which will cause Jacob's family incredible grief in the next chapter.

Jacob finally comes to the point where God wants him. He is terrified and alone when he has an encounter with God. He finally learns and accepts his insufficiency and need. He is forever scarred by his encounter with God, but he is also forever changed from Jacob to Israel.

God has been working on Jacob. He is not the same man that he was when he left home twenty years ago. He demonstrates humility, love for others, and even repentance as God prepares him for a confrontation. God is backing Jacob against the wall so he will have nothing but God to trust in, and this will culminate in God coming to Jacob himself - and changing him.

However God is consistently moving Jacob toward Himself as He pushes Jacob to trust Him. The escape of Jacob will inevitably lead to God Himself meeting Jacob on the way home
