Screener Squad: Dead

EDEAD MOVIE REVIEW In this New Zealand horror-comedy, we meet Marbles; a listless stoner who gets by by injecting a mix of weed and his late father’s neurological meds into himself that allows him to see and interact with ghosts which he charges people to talk with through him. His life is thrown out of his rut when a cop in his small town turns up dead…or, rather, his ghost turns up to Marbles exhorting him to solve his murder by a serial killer picking people off in their town. Marbles is not interested but a dangling promise of cutting into a life insurance policy gives him SOME motivation. Which is more motivation than our critics think the makers of this movie had in trying to make it any good. Listen to Chris, Adrian, Lewayne, and Marco try to get something out of the corpse. This review is available in a longer, uncut, video version for TIME LORD subscribers and above. Watch it here. OFFICIAL WEBSITE/TRAILER DIRECTED BY: Hayden J. Screener Squad: Lost Girls & Love Hotels

ELOST GIRLS & LOVE HOTELS MOVIE REVIEW Alexandra Daddario is a ‘lost girl’ in Tokyo. By day she teaches English pronunciation at a flight attendant training school. By night, she drinks, she carouses, she looks for shy young Japanese men to go back to ‘love hotels’ with and have kinky sex. Then she meets Kazu, a strong and silent type but intriguing new partner, and not just because he’s apparently a Yakuza. Ok, yes, that’s probably a big part of it. Their affair is torrid (the film tells us) and she quickly begins to lose what control she had over her life. Chris, Adrian, and Jordan watched this one and they tell if their affection for staring into Daddario’s icy blue eyes won them over or if this movie should cut off a finger in shame. This review is available in a longer, uncut, video version for subscribers at the TIME LORD level and above. Click here to watch it. Screener Squad: Ratched

ERATCHED TV SERIES REVIEW Were you a fan of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” but always wondered: what’s the deal with Nurse Ratched? Where did she come from? No? Well Ryan Murphy has a new show made for no one titled “Ratched”. Sarah Paulson plays the titular nurse as she manipulates her way to being head nurse of a mental hospital whilst Bernard Hermann music cribbed from other (better) things sets the scene. Bradly, Nathan, Wright and Frank let you know if they were “committed” to this series or if it felt like an 8 episode lobotomy. There is a longer, uncut, video version of this review for subscribers at the TIME LORD level and above. Click here to watch. Screener Squad: The Artist’s Wife

ETHE ARTIST’S WIFE MOVIE REVIEW What does one do when their significant other is in the mist of losing their memories? That and more is examined in “The Artist’s Wife”, directed and co-written by Tom Dolby (“Last Weekend”). The film follows renowned artist Richard (Bruce Dern) as he develops early onset dementia and is aided by fellow artist and his wife Claire (Lena Olin), who tries to tie together long broken bonds, hide his illness from the art community, and decide whether to step out of his shadow that she has long stood in and pursue her own art. Our esteemed critics of Mindy, Jordan, and Bradley examine this exquisite piece and discuss its worthiness. This review comes in a longer, uncut, video version for subscribers at TIME LORD level or above. Click here to watch. Screener Squad: Kajillionaire

EKAJILLIONAIRE MOVIE REVIEW The deceptively simple plot of Miranda July’s third film “Kajillionaire” belies the much more complex subtextual discussion. It’s the tale of the Dynes, a mother (Debra Winger), father (Richard Jenkins), and daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) who live their lives as low-rent grifters. They bunk in a rented for cheap retail space next to…a bubble factory? Upshot being, several times a day as part of their routine, they keep the bubbles from overflowing into their living space. They grift what they can and it’s clear that the only people worth considering in this world to them, are themselves. Wood has never known anything but this existence and she’s distrustful and broken in a way that’s initially impossible to connect with outside of Wood’s thoughtful performance. When a newcomer comes into their tribe, the giddy just to be involved Gina Rodriguez, the status quo is shook and things seem sure to change. Chris, Frank, Santiago, and Brad take a look at th...

Screener Squad: Challenger: The Final Flight

ECHALLENGER: THE FINAL FLIGHT MINISERIES The world was stunned in late January 1986 when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded moments after its launch. The event instantly killed the Challenger’s crew, including Christa McAuliffe, the schoolteacher who had been chosen out of thousands of hopefuls to be the first educator in space. The public’s fondness for McAuliffe further made the event a bona fide national tragedy which no one has ever forgotten. Now, a new 4-part docuseries from Netflix and producer J.J. Abrams, the show looks back on the event and everything leading up to it. Featuring interviews with family members, former Nasa employees and a wealth of archival footage, the story of the Challenger, including who might’ve been responsible for its untimely demise, is explored. Join Frank, Mark, Jennifer and Santiago as they go back to one of the most unforgettable moments in American history. Screener Squad: Last Call

ELAST CALL MOVIE REVIEW Well this one’s hard to make funny. This is the story of a suicidal man who thinks he’s calling a helpline only to accidentally call a career center and speak with the young woman working the night shift as a janitor there. Last Call’s biggest claim to fame is its use of 2 split-screen single takes that never cut over the course of the film. Does this aesthetic risk help or hurt the harrowing story the movie’s trying to tell? Find out when our reviewers Davey, Adrian, Lewayne, and Dogget close out their tabs for “Last Call”! Screener Squad: Blackbird

EBLACKBIRD MOVIE REVIEW If you think visiting your family at Christmas was awkward, try doing one where you actively know someone is about to die! This English-language remake of the Danish film “Silent Heart” is directed by Roger Mitchell (“Notting Hill”, “Morning Glory”) and written, both times over, by Christian Torpe. Susan Sarandon leads an all-star cast of Sam Neill, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Rainn Wilson, and Lindsay Duncan in a family dramedy about acceptance, love, forgiveness, and mortality. Gathered together for this morbid feast are Ben, Mindy, Jordan, and Frank. Let’s see if they’re ready to let this movie pass peacefully or, you know, the other thing. Screener Squad: Spiral

ESPIRAL MOVIE REVIEW One of Shudder’s newest offerings for horror fans during the spooky season is…a mostly quiet drama about trauma and bigotry. Well, alright then. “Spiral” stars Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman as Malik and Ari Cohen as Aaron, a gay couple in 1995 who have recently moved to a serene rural town with their daughter Kayla. The neighbors are friendly at first but they quickly seem to turn sinister. Can Malik get his loved ones to safety? Can this movie escape its horrible poster that you should probably avoid looking up if you don’t want things spoiled for you? And can our reviewers Davey, Bradley, Adrian, and Lewayne find their thoughts on this film before the spiral takes them too? Find out now! Subscribers at TIME LORD level or above can watch the longer, uncut, video version of the review right here. Screener Squad: The Swerve

ETHE SWERVE MOVIE REVIEW Azura Sky commands in the lead role of this film as Holly; a mother, wife, teacher whose life from the outside seems ideal. But her kids are horrible disrespectful brats, her husband is likely cheating on her, her sister and mother treat her abysmally, and there’s this damn mouse in her house…THIS DAMN MOUSE. Things are about to go downhill and fast for Holly as her ‘perfect’ life gradually shatters. Chris, Jena, Robert, and Adrian discuss the devil in those details.
