Lost Stars

EAre we all lost stars trying to light up the dark? This episode is more of a downbeat/upbeat commemoration of some artists we have lost recently, have become stardust on the way to the big (Champagne?) Supernova. So this one goes out to Peter Green, Denise Johnson, Neil Innes, Andrew Weatherall and of course that lonely dying pulsar, Ian Curtis. We also celebrate the anniversary of Closer at 40, Happy Monday’s Hallelujah at a belated 30, Fleetwood Mac and Vogid-19 mashups, covers and of course as is now lockdown tradition the Kitchen Knees Up/Disco… The first part with breakbeat techno classics mixed with rude freaky house and acid, and then an Ibizan baggy knees up later…kitchen top on, knives one, get salted! Dance like no-one is watching…because they are! CP 1919, come in, your time is up! (178Mb, 1:57) * Joy Division – Isolation* Adriana A – Mask, Gloves, Soap, Vogue (Todrick Hall vs. Madonna)* Hard Ton – Useless Man* Freeform Five – Perspex Sex (Ewan’s Hi Nrg Remix)* Slam – Positive Education (Skream Remix)* Shirobon x Gfoty – Destroy U* Instrumental – Orbital / Forever* Chris Coco featuring Peter Green – Albatross (Hybrid Remix)* ToToM – Bad Girls Turning (Fleetwood Mac vs. M.I.A.)* Sherwood & Pinch – Fake Days featuring LSK* Joy Division – Twenty Four Hours* The New Marketts – Song From M.A.S.H.(1976 Long Version)* Pachanga Boys – Power* Blanck Mass – Dead Format* Client – Happy* Mariah – Shinzō no Tobira* Happy Mondays – Hallelujah (Ewan Pearson Remix)* Primal Scream – Screamadelica* Sherwood & Pinch – One Law For The Rich featuring Daddy Freddy & Dubiterian* Reveal – Been A Long Time feat. One Nation Under A Roof

EIt’s Really Interesting Arse-kicking Audio, kids! Cease and desist what you’re doing and listen! A Universal middle finger response for those with a Big Life on an Island Sanctuary: the corporate Dream that Works is actually complete nightmare. Things have changed in lockdown, power has shifted, artists are showing they can work happily without major label infrastructure. If the big record companies wise up fast they will go the way of the nightclub and the meet and greet in lockdown. They really need to stop attacking us little guys, because in this New Normal they actually need the DJs, the podcasters and independent media more than ever, otherwise they become totally irrelevant in the age of the DIY record label at home. A disco podcast with a library music bent – but the libraries are still all shut? Art funk, cloudy hiphop with a chance of chap hop, politics, ambience, nu-gaze, rock, Chilly House, Cuban disco, reggae disco, Rick & Morty memories, a Brit Pop comedown, even ga...

Summer Always Happens When It's Raining

EThrowing out a queer life ring to those missing London Pride, Notting Hill Carnival and drowning under the constant rain – although yesterday the sun came back but we’ve had weeks of rain – the classic British Summer! Starts with a traditional summer jungle / drum and bass mix fromme, and then more downtempo with disco, ibiza and ambient acid house house, psychedelic disco, , funk and even Kraftwerk Steel Drum covers and new tracks from Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer, Kotomi & Ryan Elder, William Maranci, Type 303, Pete Cannon and Dimension, and an exclusive new mashup from me in the mix. And we salute film maestro Ennio Morricone and his spaghetti western soundtracks….and some notes from the frontline of Lockdown London and Superspreader Saturdays. This is a sibling of the next podcast, it’s not really part 1 and 2 but certainly grew out of this one getting too large! Big thanks to Ian of The Lloydbrary who inspired the jungle mix in this show with his Sea of Bass #187 podcast, and...

Summer Dischttps://www.mutantpop.net/mp3s/longmixes/summer-disco-pride-mix.mp3

EI WILL SURVIVE! FREE MY PEOPLE! I wasn’t planning to make a Pride mix this year, but friends asked me to DJ a two hour set at a live disco event and y’all know how much I L-O-V-E D-I-S-C-O! It was on Midsummer’s Night, the night of the Solstice on Saturday, the start of summer, hence the slight summer theme – yes plenty of Donna as well in various forms! Thanks to PomDeter and oki for making it possible and doing great sets beforehand – oki’s set is here and you can see Poms still on Twitch. Both way better than mine! And I recorded it…I had to clean it up since I had technical issues and quite a few trainwrecks at the start, but the tunes stand out even if my mixing doesn’t! Because of current events such as Black Lives Matter, the fact that 50 years on from the first Pride, any Prides that have been held this month in lockdown have become quite rightly protests for our black queer family. So I chose many of the tunes to show the intersection between black/BAME and LGBTQ cu...

A Line In The Sand Part 2: Black Lives Matter

EAnti-racism and Black Lives Matter is not just for a week or a month, it’s for a lifetime. The danger is that as this article points out, us white people have a history of dealing with racism and handwringing that actually doesn’t create action. Obfuscating it with their guilt and ‘need to listen/know more’ which is quite often a well-meant distraction exercise. It’s great for books by Ta-Nehisi Coates and self-help industry, less great for actual change. So I post this second part with a hope that this time it’s different, that people actually start challenging systemic racism in their lives – be it their racist granny or their dodgy job or more importantly their own biases and prejudices. Stamp out those contradictions! Cos all of us ‘wypipo’ was brought up in a toxic soup of white supremacy, and dodgy ideas like ‘racists are only bad people, and I am not a bad person!’, ‘I see no race/we are all human’ and the much derided ‘I have black friends! I cannot be racist!...

A Line In The Sand (Black Lives Matter Part 1)

EBrothers and Sisters…I don’t know what this world is coming to…. My response to the death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter protests around the world and is to create a two-parter focusing on radical and revolutionary voices criticising racism, fascism and police brutality. So I pass the mic to celebrate and uplift the musical and spoken work of BAME artists, writers and voices of resistance, and mixed groups showing unity. And as black intersects queer via the Civil Rights struggle inspiring Stonewall and during the 50th year of Pride, so I also focus a little on black and white LGBTQ* voices of resistance as well. These podcasts are dedicated to all those who have died at the hands of the police (a few are listed at the start), and those queer black people we owe so much to such as Marsha P Johnson, Bayard Rustin and Lorraine Hansberry, amongst many others. Black and white, united and fight. (1:51, 160Mb) * Public Enemy – Rebel Without A Pause (Rhythm Scholar Maximum Rag...

New Mashup – Ghost Rats (B. Dolan vs Ghost vs zeropoint)

EAlthough this mashup of B.Dolan’s ‘Rats Get Fat’ and Ghost’s ‘Rats’ was originally created about the COVID-19 pandemic and started two months ago it seems oddly appropriate about #blackoutuesday and #blacklivesmatter and the riots going on in the States. Compared to my last one my hope has become anger over the lockdown – it is a mashup about resistance and class war, that rats get fat when good men die, that we are not all in this together, that they don’t care about us, and some of us even less due to the colour of our skin. And given the Ghost lyric about cities burning it seems spookily prescient to the last few days. Anyway there are two versions – the original rock demo which was hindered by the lack of a decent instrumental, and the ‘Ghostwave’ Synthwave Second Wave version which I think works better using a cover of Rats by Zeropoint. Thanks go to @hinoirocks and Ian of The Lloydbrary for the help making this mashup. Instamatic – Ghost Rats (Second Wave Mix v3.0)...

Warning: contains mid-00’s shonky blog mixing as well for total authenticity! And a total of seven mashups…shock horror. What is the world coming to? Also contains jungle, hardcore rave, folk, hi-NRG, reggae covers, hauntology, ambient, hip-hop, and songs from hundreds of years ago and last week. Also ends the only way Bastards know how. RC 324: New Normal / Coronacoaster

EEveryone’s talking at me…about The New Normal, which apparently is like New Coke, i.e like the old one but with all the nice things taken out. Apparently we are in a new future, one that seems to be cribbing the lyrics to East 17 songs…Stay now…stay now…stay now…and government mixed message memes with laughable yet tragic consequences. Wonka says really? We ride the coronacoaster (which isn’t great as it sounds) and in every job that must be done, there is an element of fun so I find a few musical silver linings in the Dark Cloud of COVIDIOT-1918. Behind the clouds is the sun still shining….yet into each life some rants must fall, Some days must be dark and dreary! 80’s pop, drum and bass, hardcore rave, jungle, indie, dub, reggae, trip-hop, afrobeat, ambient, covers, edits, electronica – even songs from 1943 AND 1583! Dark & Lonely Folk: Folk Horror and Black Aquarius with Ian of The Lloydbrary

ESumer is Icumen in, Loudly sing, cuckoo! Grows the seed and blows the mead, And springs the wood anew. Happy May Day! It’s sunrise on May the 1st and here’s a witchy folk horror & Black Aquarius edition of Radio Clash with Ian of The Lloydbrary blog and podcast. We stumble into the sleepy pastoral village like lambs to the slaughter and find there folk that is freaky, acidic, dark and new, and discovering the dark rituals of the Age of Aquarius when flower power gained thorns and dabbled with the occult. Revelations are shared of the Folk Horror Three-fold of The Wicker Man, Witchfinder General aka The Conqueror Worm and Blood On Satan’s Claw aka Satan’s Skin, and the music of those films. Then we delve deeper into the murky waters of being scarred by mid 70’s children’s series and Public Service Announcements such as Children of the Stones, The Changes, The Owl Service, Picturebox, Dark and Lonely Water and inspired parodies like Scarfolk.
