Welcome back or welcome to the Taming Lightning Podcast, I'm Percy Echols II. I'm the creator and host of Taming Lightning, as well as emerging Plasma Tech at Pittsburgh Glass Center, where I'm researching and developing a space for exploring Plasma and Neon Light.Taming Lightning Podcast is a series of conversations to help expand our understanding of Plasma and Neon Light - looking beyond it's associations with novelty and sign making, and to explore the potential for Noble Gases as an artistic medium with each guest sharing their unique knowledge and experience.

Bruce and I have been in conversation for over a year or so, we met in person last year at the Plasma Parley hosted by Glas, Neon Art Studio in Raleigh, NC. This was recorded towards the end of my trip to the Bay area in January, where in addition to visiting, I was doing some Technical Consultation for Half Moon Bay Art Glass regarding acquired neon equipment, and passing that along for additional modifications and repairs by Bruce. In addition to Mr. Suba’s background we’ll be hearing some much-needed wisdom in the pursuit of plasma, the need to learn as much as you can, the importance of connecting with communities such as the ASGS, the American Scientific Glassblowing Society, and other tidbits.

His diverse use of materials in his artwork are often accompanied and or influenced by light. During my trip to the Bay area in January, I asked Patrick Collentine, a former student of Cork, and whom was my instructor in plasma, for an introduction. I was invited to meet him at his Studio, And when I arrived I was greeted warmly and we began our conversation.

When it came to neon he was inspired by neon and furnace works of Paul Seide that he saw when visiting the Heller Gallery, which leads to his first Neon experience in 1993 as an assistant to Jacob Fishman at Penland School of Craft. In today’s podcast we have Tommy Gustafsschiöld of Nordic Neon and Diod. He’s one of the last remaining Neon Shops in all of Scandinavia. We’ll hear about his beginnings and earlier life prior to neon, as well his recent explorations in making art whether it be a collaboration or his own. What I also find interesting is how he processes or bombards his neon tubes using a kiln or oven rather than a high power transformer, in addition, coating his own tubes. By the time this podcast is released, I will have traveled to Sweden as part of the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh Grant, where I had the opportunity to visit and travel with Tommy to The Glass Factory Boda. Here I assisted and taught a hot shop and plasma class with Ed Kirshner and Jaime Guerrero, where took what we learned from our class taught in Pittsburgh last year, essentially Blow and Glow 2.0. I also participated in the conversation for setting up neon and plasma for the Glass Art Society Conference in May 2020, where I will be one of the presenters.

Today’s podcast will be a bit different, it’ll feature some of the participants in the Plasma Parley get together host by Neon and Art Studio Glas work in Raleigh by Nate Sheaffer and his crew Zach Willis and Danielle James, along with Bruce Suba on the lead and lathe demos by Mike G of Merge Scientific. This took place over the 4th of July weekend, and I could not think of any other way to celebrate than creating our own firework and sharing that experience among new and old friends. In order of today’s episode, we’ll feature Nate Shaeffer, Adam Smo, Justin Parr, Harold Lasswell, Aaron Ristau, David Nickles, and Zach Willis.
