元朝末年,朝政败坏,民不聊生。

浙江钱塘知县施耐庵(1296—1370)替穷人伸冤,遭朝廷训斥,于是辞官回乡。至正十三年(1353),盐民张士诚率众起义,他敬重施耐庵的才华,再三邀请施耐庵当他的谋士。施耐庵抱着建设美好家园的愿望欣然前往,为张士诚献上了许多攻城略地的计策。张士诚居功自傲,亲小人,远忠臣,独断专行。施耐庵几次劝谏,张士诚都不予采纳。施耐庵又气又恼,离开了张士诚,靠教书为生。

“水浒”即水边的意思,有“在野”的含义。

《水浒传》是中国最早的用白话文写成的章回体小说,讲述了一个官逼民反的故事:不学无术的无赖高俅因为球踢得好,被皇帝封为高官。他倚仗权势压榨和迫害民众,激起了民众的反抗。《水浒传》最为精彩之处在于对人物的塑造。全书重点描写了一百零八位梁山好汉,虽然侧重不同,但每个人物都有血有肉,脾气性情各不相同,连大评论家金圣叹都赞美道:“《水浒传》真是一百零八人,一百零八样。”尖锐激烈的矛盾冲突,往往通过一个个场面展开,用一个个细节描写,一步步地推向高潮,让人读来心潮起伏,大呼过瘾。

《水浒传》版本众多,流传极广,对东亚各国的叙事文学都产生了极其深远的影响。
