*Rebroadcast* (originally aired 9/3/21)After the mass murder at Robb Elementary school in Texas yesterday, we're re-airing our Sue Klebold episode. In All The Wiser, we use human stories to challenge us to think differently about the world, and to learn about different perspectives, voices, and messages. In order to prevent mass shootings, it is imperative to understand all the factors that lead to them. This fall, I had the privilege of talking to two moms who lost their sons in very different ways to school shootings. One of them was Sue Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold, one of Columbine's two shooters. The second was Scarlett Lewis, the mother of Jesse Lewis, who was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook. Both women loved their sons and dedicated their lives to ending mass shootings. It is my hope that today in re-airing Sue's episode and encouraging you to also listen to Scarlett's story, we can think deeply about how little boys grow up to become young men who commit mass murders.Let's learn from them so we can all decide what role we will play in ending the heartbreak in our country.Subscribe to All The Wiser wherever you listen to podcasts - we’re on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and more! Our brains are wired to make judgments about others so we can make sense of the world, and the vast amounts of information we are confronted with each day. But there is a cost to our assumptions. In today’s mini-episode, Kimi and Christy talk about their new favorite person Martin Lockett, who spent 17 years in prison for drunk driving and manslaughter. Martin’s story is a reminder of the power of redemption and the benefits of setting aside the judgmental mind: More connection, creativity, friendship, compassion and diversity! Christy also shares her experience as a public defender and her northstar borrowed from the brilliant Bryan Stevenson: “each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done.”Last, All The Wiser was nominated for a webby. Kimi and Christy discuss the idea that maybe, just maybe, these mini-episodes should simply be a podcast club. Why? Every time they listen to an episode separately and then talk about it, they have the best conversations. They get to see the story and wisdom from a whole new perspective. And it gets better. More meaningful. More learning.Today, they try on the “podcast club” idea and talk about Jason Schechterle and their shared favorite moment of the interview. Jason described how some people look at his burn scars with pity and sorrow. The truth is that Jason is thriving and living a full life filled with love, purpose, and joy. People can't see it, so they make up a sad story. Perhaps to feel better in their suffering. Both Kimi and Christy agree that Jason is their hero when it comes to gratitude and that making assumptions about people's lives is never a good idea.Sign up for Kimi and Christy’s newsletter here for tools to thrive, words of wisdom, and stuff that makes you smile...straight to your inbox.
