As a kid the dream was to become a professional baseball player and do it for a living. I am sure that kids today have those same dreams and can see themselves hitting the homerun that wins the World Series or pitching a no-hitter. It was such a fantasy fest and we all did fantasize, but alas none of us made it. We played in and out of uniform, organized and pick up, honed our skills, took batting practice and we all thought we were so darn good, but not good enough. There were some guys in the town that I lived in that were so good that we figured we would be watching them someday playing for the Yankees. Not so. Often kids have so much undue pressure put on them by parents that they lose their love of just playing the game. Parents have to be more focused on helping their children become responsible adults and people of character. Have you ever wondered why your parents did some of the things that they did. I did lots of times. My dad had so many regimented activities that I thought he had a screw lose or something. I’m only going to talk about two here because there are too many to put into one episode of this podcast. As I grew older though I cam to realize that what I learned as a child were the missing puzzle pieces that I needed to stay healthy. Young people today are always searching for their own puzzle pieces. But, when we get older we come to realize that the puzzle pieces were handed to us, we just didn't know what to do with them. Wherever you are in life realize that change is a step of faith and we are all never too old to learn something. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/james-burns5/message
Once again I had the pleasure of speaking with Dianne DeOliveira from Jersey Shore Matters on the topic of school shootings. We discussed the possible profile of a school shooter, how they are missed, and what parents can do if they suspect their child is exhibiting behaviors that could indicate that they are at risk for violent and or deadly behavior. School Shooting have been around now for over 20 years. My prayers are and always will be with the victims friends and family's. My question is though how do you address the trauma that kids will experience on an ongoing basis because of what they witnessed in their school. Moreover how do you help students' regain the trust and confidence in their teacher's, principals, and in society in general that they will keep them safe and out of harms way. Truly in every school shooting there are victims that are killed tragically, but there are also victims that remain who are so traumatized that learning can almost become impossible. So What do we do about school and other shootings? Schools have done what they can to try and quell the fears of parents and teachers by setting up protocols for active shooters. My wife who is a classroom mother had to go through checkpoints in our daughter's school and had to be escorted to her classroom. Yet yesterday Salvador Ramos walked into Robb Elementary School In Uvalde Texas and shot 19 students and 2 teachers killing them. In Buffalo NY on May 14, 2022 13 people were killed in a racially charged incident by Payton Gendron who had a manifesto on a social media platform and identified himself as a white supremacist. Is there an answer? I think we have to first identify the problem in order to come up with a solution. We as a society are becoming more and more bitter. We can't stand our own design and are angry because of who we are, our parents, our environment, our status, and our upbringing. By the way Ramos shot his grandmother before he went over to the school. There i...
