How's your week going so far? Come sit down with me here on Pete's 2c on the Aussie English podcast! In Pete's 2c episodes, I get on Instagram and answer your awesome questions! In today's episode, I get to answer questions like where did Australian English come from, or like how Australian English came to be. Someone also asked how did English became a global language. There were also some questions on English pronunciation like how to say the words "maths", "called" vs "cold", "shoes" vs "issues" and the word "kayaking". Someone also asked if they can use the word "dedicated" to mean that someone is hardworking and disciplined - I say 'yes' to both! And finally, someone asked what can be bought as an unusual gift for their grandson's 11th birthday! It's quite tough to answer that question, as I didn't really have much off the top of my mind. I will be giving out sample situations where you can put this expression to use, along with a pronunciation exercise. Tune in for the question of the week which is “What is the difference of ON time and IN time?” And lastly, whip out your pens and paper and try to catch the dialogue from the Australian movie Crocodile Dundee 2. Welcome to another Goss episode here on the Aussie English podcast! I found this online article about restaurants in Queensland banning people from entering their establishments if they have facial or neck tattoos. It sort of triggers Australians as people start to take sides. Some say that it’s good to have the ban because people find such tattoos offensive, while others rave that there shouldn’t be discrimination because these are paying customers. So, where do we draw the line on having visible body tattoos? What if it’s a Michelin-starred restaurant, a client makes a reservation, and turns up at the place with tattoos all over? Would they run the client off? We wonder if they associated having tattoos with violent bikie gangs. But we all know not all tattooed people are nutters. How can someone tell? Join me in welcoming back my dad, Ian Smissen, to the podcast! Dad and Mum recently travelled up to Queensland and guess what? They went on this epic road trip! He shares that he was going to attend a bird photography conference up in Gold Coast, and so off they went places for about three weeks. It was also my mum’s birthday and so Dad told us about the O’Reilly Rainforest Retreat, a family friend’s property. We also talk about how kids seem to know how to get your attention, using annoying, rising inflections when calling for you - do kids in your country do the same? Happy Sunday, guys! The kids are asleep and it's time for me to get on Instagram to answer your questions! In today's Pete's 2c episode, I talk about whether Australians say 'apartment' or 'flat'. Right, urban living quarters. There was also a question about what stuff one needs to take with them when going on a trip to Australia. Yes, besides your passport, there are things you ought to be bringing with you. I also got to tell a delightful story when I was once at a beach doing research work! Someone also asked which one is correct - "I'd better go" or "I better go". And tune in for a lesson on Aussie slang as I tell you the meaning of the word 'strewth' and 'dummy'. Welcome to another round of awesome chin-wags here on the Aussie English podcast! Meet the lovely Camille Hanson, an online English teacher, influencers, author, avid language learner, and mum of three. In today's episode, we talk about what it's like being a parent to very young children & what it was like for Camille growing up in the US. You see, she grew in a very cold part of the US called Michigan; like, 6 months of winter every year! That's a lot of snow! We talk about different accents and dialects in the US and what it's like if you've got a very unique accent or dialect and decide to move somewhere, say like California or New York. We also talk about vegetarianism, and language learning - she speaks five languages! She also shares what it was like learning at school versus learning later on in life by yourself. Welcome to another Pete’s 2c episode! I really enjoy doing these episodes as I get to talk freely, like sitting down with you guys, and popping open a cold one! In today’s episode, I answer questions from my Instagram followers. I got asked if I like the US or the UK (which I found sort of hard to answer, haha). Then someone asked what I think about Brisbane & Perth, my favourite footy club, and if it’s hard to come to Australia - to which I say no! Let me know what you think about this episode! Welcome to the weekly expression lesson episode here on the Aussie English podcast! In today’s episode, I am going to teach you about the English expression “foot the bill”. Yes, quite funny & gross when you hear it being said – you begin to imagine someone giving a chopped off foot to a restaurant waiter. That’s morbid. So let’s let that slide! I’ll give you example situations where you can use the expression “foot the bill” and we’ll practice together saying the expression. I’ll also answer Elham’s question: do Australians use the word ‘cranky’? Mmm, yeah, stay tuned for my answer! And finally, make sure your ears are sharp as you try to listen to this short clip from this Australian horror-comedy movie titled 100 Bloody Acres. Clue: there are 2 people talking!
